“I’ll see out the two years” – Aston Villa star has clear plan, will leave in 2028

Pau Torres

Aston Villa defender Pau Torres is looking to see out the final two years of his contract with the club, then return to Villarreal.

El Desmarque cover comments from the 29-year-old today. It seems he has no intention of leaving Villa Park this summer, or next.

Aston Villa exit

The Spanish outlet explain that the Aston Villa centre-back recently appeared on La Otra Podcast to discuss his career to date. Part of that discussion included a conversation about a possible return to Villarreal.

The centre-back is intrinsically tied to the Spanish club. He came through their youth system before starring in the first team.

He went on to make 173 appearances for the club over the years. That included winning the Europa League in 2021 and firmly establishing himself as a fan favourite.

Pau Torres left for Aston Villa in 2023 and has established himself as a key player at Villa Park under Unai Emery since. The five year deal he signed when he joined is due to expire in 2028. And it seems he’s already thought about what he wants to do at that point in time.

“If nothing goes wrong along the way, I think I’ll see out the two years remaining on my contract, and that will mark the end of my time at Aston Villa,” he said.

Free transfer eyed

But he doesn’t want to see his former club having to pay a fee to sign him back.

“What I’d like is for Villarreal not to have to pay anything for me. For me to join as a free agent. It’s the club of my life and I don’t want them to spend money on signing me,” he added.

Indeed, the whole scenario is something he’s already discussed with Villarreal president Fernando Roig.

“If the manager in charge at the time thinks I can make a contribution, I’d be delighted to return. It’s something I’ve been thinking about and have discussed with Fernando Roig on occasion,” he concluded.
