Newcastle United have been presented with a potential replacement for Bruno Guimarães. This is significant as Arsenal continue their attempts to prise the Brazilian away from St James’ Park.

Botafogo midfielder Danilo Santos has emerged as a possible option for the Magpies, although the situation is still at an early stage and no formal offer has been made.

Journalist Venê Casagrande reports the link between the two players goes beyond their positions on the pitch. Bruno Guimarães and Danilo Santos share the same representatives: Bertolucci Sports.

These representatives are working on Arsenal’s pursuit of the Newcastle captain. At the same time,as we have covered earlier this month, they are also suggesting the Botafogo star as a potential successor if a deal eventually materialises.

Same representatives driving both situations

According to ESPN Brazil, Arsenal have already offered around £65m (€75m) for Bruno Guimarães. However, Newcastle are holding firm and are seeking a figure closer to £100m (€116m) before considering a sale.

The negotiations are described as complicated. Yet Danilo has already been put forward as a possible replacement should circumstances change.

That does not mean Newcastle have decided to pursue the Botafogo midfielder. Instead, the player’s representatives are attempting to position him as a ready-made option if Eddie Howe’s side are eventually forced into the market for a new central midfielder.

Danilo’s profile fits the type of energetic box-to-box midfielder Newcastle would likely seek if Bruno were to depart, and the 25-year-old has continued to enhance his reputation during an impressive campaign with Botafogo.

Botafogo waiting for the next move

Venê Casagrande added there are currently no offers on the table for Danilo, despite continued interest from abroad.

Botafogo are prepared to cash in if the right proposal arrives. At the same time, they are reportedly looking for €35m-40m (£30m-34m). The Brazilian club have already ruled out selling him to domestic rivals despite previous interest from Flamengo and Palmeiras.

For Newcastle, the story remains one to watch rather than an imminent transfer. Any move for Danilo appears dependent on Bruno Guimarães’ future. The fact his representatives are already positioning him as a possible replacement adds another layer to Arsenal’s pursuit of one of the Magpies’ most important players.
