Aston Villa defender close to joining new club – Ownership connection behind deal

Aston Villa

Aston Villa look to have found a solution for Yeimar Mosquera’s immediate future. The Colombian defender is now close to completing a move to Vitória de Guimarães in Portugal.

Both O Jogo and Record report the 21-year-old is on the verge of joining the Primeira Liga side after advanced talks between the clubs. O Jogo states the deal is very close to being completed. Meanwhile, Record also reports Vitória are nearing an agreement to sign the Aston Villa defender.

The reports do not yet make clear whether Mosquera will arrive on loan or in a permanent transfer, but there is growing confidence in Portugal that the move will be finalised.

The transfer is helped by the close relationship between the two clubs. According to Record, Mosquera’s move has been facilitated by the links between Vitória, Aston Villa and V Sports. The investment group owns a 29% stake in Vitória’s SAD.

Villa signed the Colombian in 2024 as one of South America’s most promising young defenders. They have continued his development since then. An international at youth level for Colombia, Mosquera also featured in every one of his country’s seven matches at the 2025 U20 World Cup.

Portugal move now appears the preferred option

Yeimar Mosquera had only recently emerged in transfer discussions elsewhere. Argentine newspaper Olé reported he had been offered to Independiente. The defender received positive internal assessments. However, he was not considered one of the club’s priority targets.

That suggested Aston Villa were exploring options for the centre-back ahead of the new season, and Portugal now appears to have provided the clearest route forward.

A move to Vitória would offer Mosquera the chance to play regular senior football in a competitive European league. At the same time, he would remain within a structure that already has strong links to Aston Villa.

With two Portuguese newspapers now reporting the agreement is close, the defender appears set to continue his development away from Villa Park, with an official announcement potentially not far away.
