Formalities to be completed in next 24 hours as Villa close in on key addition

Aston Villa are reportedly set to wrap up the signing of Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes on Friday, as he will undergo his medical and sign his new contract.

The 25-year-old established himself as a pivotal figure for Wolves after joining them from Flamengo in 2023, making 130 appearances for the club and contributing eight goals and six assists to go with his midfield influence.

However, following their relegation from the Premier League last year, he is set for a new chapter in his career, and that will bring him to Villa as his switch looks set to be completed in the next 24 hours.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Gomes will sign his new Villa deal on Friday following his medical, and he will complete a transfer worth €40m plus €5m in add-ons and become a critical addition to Unai Emery’s squad.

After Youri Tielemans departed earlier this week and with Amadou Onana facing a lengthy spell out of action due to injury, it was imperative that Villa moved to address that concern, and we’ve seemingly done so by lining up Gomes to help fill those voids.

Romano adds in his report that Villa are also in ongoing talks with Bayern Munich over a loan move for Joao Palhinha, and so that should hopefully give us enough quality and competition to replace what we’ve lost and push on next season.

Gomes is certainly the more intriguing and exciting of the potential two new midfield arrivals though, as aside from his defensive qualities and tenacity out of possession, he is also able to dictate and control possession, and so it will be interesting to see if Emery looks to develop his game to become Tielemans’ successor, or if that particular role falls on the shoulders of one of his new teammates.

He certainly looks capable of taking on more responsibility in that aspect of his game, but his partnership with Boubacar Kamara will hopefully become the foundation of our future success.

Either way, it’s shaping up to be a fascinating summer transfer window for Villa as we are rebuilding the squad to an extent and freshening things up, and should he complete his move without any late issues, Gomes will be a central figure in the next step that we take under Emery.
