Juventus head coach Luciano Spalletti has provided an update on the condition of Super Eagles-eligible forward Jeff Ekhator after the youngster picked up an injury during the club's 0-0 draw against Basel in their first preseason friendly on Saturday.
Ekhator, who joined the Bianconeri earlier in the current summer transfer window, was forced off the pitch after suffering a thigh problem, bringing an early end to what was his first outing in Juventus colours.
The 19-year-old was replaced by Dutch striker Lois Openda as Spalletti's side were forced into an early change. Despite losing the young forward to injury, Juventus held on to earn a goalless draw in Switzerland.
Basel came closest to breaking the deadlock in the 58th minute after Arthur conceded a penalty, but veteran goalkeeper Mattia Perin produced an excellent save to deny Super Eagles winger Philip Otele from the spot and preserve the stalemate.
In the 58th minute, Basel had the chance to take the lead while Arthur committed a foul in the box, but Mattia Perin saved Otele's penalty to keep the score goalless.
Speaking after the match, Spalletti revealed that Ekhator complained of discomfort at the back of his thigh but expressed hope that the injury would not keep the teenager out for long.
"He felt a little pain in the back, let's hope he's not hurt," Spalletti told Sky Italia.
The injury will come as a disappointment for Ekhator, who was hoping to make a strong impression during preseason after completing his move to Juventus.
The highly rated forward remains eligible to represent Nigeria at senior international level despite making his debut for Italy in friendly matches in June 2026, as he has yet to feature in a competitive fixture for the Azzurri.
With the new season fast approaching, Ekhator will be hoping the injury proves to be a minor setback as he looks to regain full fitness, build momentum during preseason and justify Juventus' decision to bring him to Turin ahead of the 2026/2027 campaign.
