Despite a stellar stint in Spain, Marcus Rashford faces a shock return to Old Trafford as Barcelona pivot to new targets, handing Michael Carrick a massive boost.
Marcus Rashford joined Barcelona on a season-long loan from Manchester United at the beginning of the campaign, following a productive spell at Aston Villa during the second half of the previous season after falling out of favour at Old Trafford.
The move quickly proved to be a masterstroke. Thriving under Hansi Flick, Rashford rediscovered his best form and enjoyed one of the most consistent campaigns of his career. The England international contributed 14 goals and 14 assists in 49 appearances across all competitions, establishing himself as a vital part of Barcelona's attacking setup.
His performances made the loan an unquestionable success, with many expecting Barcelona to trigger the £26 million option to sign him permanently. Given Rashford's impact and pedigree, the fee appeared to represent outstanding value in the current market.
Yet, fresh doubts have now emerged over the 28-year-old's future at Camp Nou. Rather than moving to secure Rashford on a permanent basis, Barcelona have instead strengthened their attack with the £70 million signing of Anthony Gordon and the £25 million addition of Karim Adeyemi.
That decision has left his club career uncertain, and he will now return to Manchester United for pre-season following the conclusion of the 2026 World Cup.
Previous reports indicated that Michael Carrick would welcome Marcus Rashford back into the fold at Old Trafford, and that may now be the case, as David Ornstein revealed on The Athletic FC Podcast.
“Marcus Rashford is expected to be reintegrated into the United squad.
“Rashford only wants to stay at Man United if he remains in England, but would consider offers from top European clubs like Barcelona, PSG, Bayern Munich or Real Madrid.
“If Rashford stays, it saves United a transfer fee and agent commissions on a new winger, freeing up resources for midfield.
“The club will also need to decide whether they can sell Joshua Zirkzee and for how much, as that will help shape their budget."
As Manchester United push on in their summer rebuild, a third midfielder is expected to be targeted, with Manu Koné seemingly being the main target, and a £50 million bid will reportedly be enough to secure the signing of the French midfielder who shone at the World Cup.
With United also on the lookout for a left-back, the club will need to free up as many resources as possible, and keeping Rashford does just that. While Michael Carrick could also be in the market for a striker, Rashford has shown in the past that he is versatile enough to play both as a left-winger and a striker.
Benjamin Šeško will be United's starting striker next season, but in terms of a backup option, Joshua Zirkzee's performances at Old Trafford have indicated that he is not an out-and-out striker and is a significant downgrade on the Slovenian striker, as United prepare for deep runs in domestic competitions, as well as a Champions League campaign.
The only sticking point in reintegration talks will be Rashford's wages at the club, with the 28-year-old reportedly paid £325,000 per week. The Englishman was willing to drastically reduce his wages to stay at Barcelona; perhaps the same can be the case ahead of a return to his boyhood club.
