PHIL PARKINSON felt Wrexham were effective at both ends of the pitch in their victory over Premier League giants Manchester United.
The Reds won 1-0 against the Premier League giants in their pre-season outing at Helsinki's iconic Olympic Stadium.
United named a strong side for the first half, with Harry Maguire, Mason Mount, new signing Andrey Santos, Bryan Mbeumo and Luke Shaw among the stars on display, but Wrexham gave a good account of themselves in the opening period and Sam Smith scored what turned out to be the only goal in the 39th minute.
Parkinson made 10 changes at the break while Michael Carrick sent out a side entirely composed of academy products and although United dominated, they struggled to create chances.
"It was another good work-out for us," Parkinson told the official club website.
"I spoke to the lads about the out of possession work had to be spot on and I thought it was.
"We restricted them to very little and equally had some good moments ourselves.
"We got the goal and obviously pleased with the work-out and the detail we had to put into the game.
"We've spoken about it many times that when you come up against teams, whether it is in the FA Cup, that any detail which isn't right gets exploited.
"The distance between the units and the work from the lads was really good and on the back of that, like I said prior to the game, we weren't coming here just to do that.
"It was important that we had the confidence and belief to get control on the game like we did.
"That team they had out first half was a very strong team and they put a very youthful team on in the second period, and we coped with that really well."
Smith started his career at United and Parkinson was delighted to see his striker get on the scoresheet in the second pre-season outing which came on the back of a goalless draw against Wisła Kraków in Poland.
"Great for Sam. He's always there and that's his game," said the Reds' boss.
"I felt he gave two good centre-halves a really tough 45 minutes with his runs down the side and his physicality.
"Of course, strikers want to score whether it is pre-season or it is in the season, and Sam will be happy with that I am sure."
