Man Utd transfer news is heating up. Hugo Larsson has emerged as a top target for Michael Carrick’s midfield rebuild. United have opened talks with the Swedish star, but Newcastle also want him.

Man United open talks to sign Hugo Larsson

Man United have made contact with the agents of the Swedish midfielder. As reported by The Hard Tackle, sporting director Jason Wilcox is leading the pursuit for the 22-year-old talent. The scouting team has long admired the player. They have been tracking him since his record-breaking move from Malmo to the Bundesliga in 2023.

However, the Old Trafford leadership faces stiff competition from Newcastle United. Newcastle have also held talks with the camp of Hugo Larsson to explore a possible transfer. The Magpies want to fill the void that Sandro Tonali’s exit left. This dual interest from Premier League giants could lead to an expensive bidding war. Although no offer has been submitted from United, they should move early if they want to secure him.

Michael Carrick views the player as the final piece of his midfield overhaul. Under Carrick, hope for glory has come back at Old Trafford as they have returned to the Champions League. They want to keep this newfound momentum ongoing by adding good players to their squad.

UEFA Champions League 7 0 0 206 1

Why Hugo Larsson is the perfect fit for Carrick’s midfield?

The manager is overseeing a huge upgrade of the engine room of the squad. United have already made two signings this window. They have signed Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos and Aston Villa star Youri Tielemans for a total of £85m. Carrick still wants a third new midfielder, with Larsson his top choice.

Also, the need for a defensive midfielder has become more urgent. Casemiro is likely to leave when his contract expires this summer. Moreover, a serious ACL injury to Manuel Ugarte has added urgency to the search.

Hugo Larsson’s physical profile has been compared to world-class midfielders like Rodri and Declan Rice. He is 6’2″ tall and physically strong with great stamina. He has good press resistance and is able to turn past attackers with composure.

The statistics reflect his quality. He averaged an 86.8% pass completion rate in the Bundesliga in the 2025/26 season, as reported by FOTMOB. Larsson also had 31 interceptions and 94 defensive contributions. He won the Young Player of the Year award in the Swedish League in 2022. He also won the Swedish Cup. Larsson combines mobility with great ball control. Those qualities make him a strong fit for Carrick’s midfield.

Frankfurt’s valuation and other midfield options on United’s shortlist

Frankfurt are in a strong negotiating position regarding the future of their young asset. The midfielder is under contract until June 2029 and has no release clause in his deal. This means that the German football club have total leverage in any transfer discussions.

As reported by The Peoples Person, the club valued the player at an ambitious €60 million last summer. However, that value has gone down since. Experts now consider a fee of €40 million to €50 million to be more realistic. The price tag could be attractive to English sides looking to buy into the talent.

Man United are also considering other targets like Roma’s Manu Kone and Fulham’s Sander Berge. Alex Scott from Bournemouth has also been linked to them. However, the Swedish international holds an edge as a more skilled No. 6 option who can grow with the team.
