“I am certainly grateful”–Manchester United flop staying positive and aiming big

Manchester United

Manchester United flop Tyrell Malacia has insisted he only looks at his time at Old Trafford in a positive light, despite his injury nightmare at the club.

Soccer News relay an interview from the 26-year-old today, with ESPN, as he looks to get his career back on track.

Looking to the future

Tyrell Malacia is officially a free agent after leaving Manchester United at the start of the month. That brought an end to a troubled four year stay at the club.

He joined the Red Devils in the Red Devils in a 15m deal from Feyenoord in 2022 but made just 50 appearances in four years for them.

That was largely due to injury issues, with a knee injury suffered in 2023 seeing him spend 500 days out of action and miss over 70 games for Manchester United. It’s an injury he is still trying to recover from.

He became something of a forgotten man at Manchester United as a result. But he insists he looks back with nothing but positive thoughts.

“It’s been great,” he said.

“I’ve experienced some wonderful things and some not-so-wonderful things, but I’m certainly grateful to have had the chance to play for such a big club.

“Manchester United is a closed chapter. I’m curious to see what comes next. I want to be a footballer again, to enjoy the game. That’s what I do it for.”

“Things in the works”

He then confirmed that “there are things in the works, while he would “absolutely” love to feature for the Netherlands once again. But for now, the focus is on proving something to himself.

“Ultimately, the primary goal is to do well at club level,” he added.

“But then there’s the Euros coming up, the World Cup… You never know what might happen, but those are certainly things I’m looking forward to.”

“I’m very much guided by my feelings. The feeling just has to be right. When you regain your confidence, you can really soar. That’s essentially what I want to show, not even to the outside world, but to myself.

“I only have something to prove to myself. That’s how I’ve always been: I want to be able to look at myself in the mirror every day and say I was better than I was yesterday.”
