With the dust now finally settling on the 2026 World Cup and all the players now returning to their clubs from the USA ahead of pre-season, the transfer market is set to spring into life.
Although United are not long coming off a rather hectic period, which saw the arrival of Andrey Santos, Karl Dallow, and Youri Tielemans, there has yet to be much further major news regarding who United will be moving for next.
There have still been some small rumours of names Manchester United fans will already be familiar with from this window, with the likes of Manu Kone, Carlos Baleba, and Alex Scott all being mentioned amongst United's potential targets.
However, a recent development with one of the club's targets' contract situation may have just further opened the doors to a potential move this summer.
According to reports from Lyall Thomas at Sky Sports News, Bournemouth midfielder and United target Alex Scott is said to have turned down a new contract proposal from the Cherries amid interest from many Premier League clubs, with the Englishman unable to agree to the terms of the revised deal.
It has been made abundantly clear by Bournemouth that they do not wish to see Scott leave this window, especially after achieving European football for the first time in the club's history, a feat that requires a deep squad of quality they cannot afford to lose.
As well as the Red Devils, Arsenal and Chelsea are believed to be the other frontrunners for the midfielder's signature this summer, albeit being a difficult deal to complete. The Cherries are set to demand a hefty fee to let Scott depart, with a figure around the £85 million mark said to be needed.
With no major moves yet to be made for the player as things stand, Bournemouth currently expects Scott to remain at the club for the coming season, with it being a part of a club-wide stance to keep their best players. This policy also extends to the likes of Rayan and Junior Kroupi.
It is no secret that United are still in search of a third addition to their ever-growing revamp of the club's midfield this Summer, with Scott being a recurring name amongst United's midfield prospects this summer.
As much as the Englishman would likely prove to be a fine addition to Michael Carrick's midfield roster, his price and profile could prove to be potential red flags.
With Bournemouth set to demand an astronomical fee for his services, it is yet to be seen whether United would be willing to pay such a fee for a player this summer, with the club's business so far proving to be shrewd and at good value, as well as already walking away from deals they felt were too extortionate, such as the deal for Matheus Fernandes.
As well as this, with United in need of a more athletic, defensive-minded profile to help bring a greater balance to the team, Scott doesn't really fit this role, especially for the fee that the Red Devils would have to cough up when the club also still needs additions in other areas of the squad.
