Jhon Lucumi is likely to leave Bologna this summer and Manchester United have emerged as a candidate to sign him.
The centre-back has been one of the Rossoblu’s best players in the last few campaigns. He has established himself as one of the most reliable defenders in Serie A too. Even if there were doubts about his future last summer, his impact in the 2025/26 campaign wasn’t any less.
Sport Witness covered how Sunderland had pushed for his signature in 2025. Their offer was rejected but Bologna have failed to tie him down to a contract.
His current deal runs until the summer of 2027 and this is naturally attracting attention from many clubs.
Manchester United are in the race, which is a problem for Juventus, who are also keen.
Fears about Red Devils’ involvement

Juve are interested, especially as they earned a significant amount from their resale percentage in Tarik Muharemovic’s contract. Manchester United have been described as a ‘dangerous rival’ for the Colombian.
The newspaper believe Michael Carrick’s side could soon make a major offer for Lucumi. This would satisfy Bologna, who have seen the player’s release clause worth €28m expire on 15th July.
Our take: Could be a bargain for United
Due to the fitness issues around Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs De Ligt, Manchester United may well move for a centre-back. Since they have other priorities in the market, they may not want to go overboard with spending on that position though.
A move for Lucumi could be perfect. He can easily slot in for Martinez and can play in either a back three or back four. He is at the peak of his powers, having impressed at the World Cup as well.
Bologna CEO Claudio Fenucci this week said the player can leave.
“A year ago, we couldn’t sell him at the end of the transfer window, but we promised him that this year, given a suitable offer, we’d make it happen.”
Fenucci said there is still a chance of him staying, especially if no clubs make formal offers. That is how things look right now.
“The transfer window hasn’t really taken off yet, and if it didn’t for Lucumi either, we’d be happy to keep him.”
