Wes Brown has praised the progress Manchester United made under Michael Carrick, describing the club’s back four as “super good”. The former United defender also believes another couple of signings could leave Carrick with a strong squad for the new season.
Brown highlighted the greater balance Carrick brought to the team after returning to Old Trafford. The 46-year-old guided United back into the Champions League and earned the permanent head coach role following his successful interim spell.
Speaking during an appearance shared through BBC Sounds, Brown praised Carrick’s calm personality and the structure he introduced.
The former England international did not select a preferred defensive quartet. Instead, he offered a positive verdict on the unit as a whole and the protection United provided in front of it.
Carrick’s move to a four-man defence helped several players rediscover their strongest form. Harry Maguire previously said the system suited him better, while United also became more compact and difficult to break down.

Wes Brown believes Carrick only needs a few additions
Brown said the signings already completed, combined with potentially “a couple more”, could place United in a promising position.
Carrick has already strengthened his midfield with Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans. Karl Darlow has added experience in goal, while Tynan Thompson joined the academy from Tottenham.

United still appear interested in adding another midfielder and defensive reinforcements. A long-term left-back remains under consideration, while the club have also assessed potential additions at centre-half.
The opening pre-season defeat against Wrexham showed that work remains before the competitive campaign begins. However, Brown’s comments reflect the progress Carrick made after restoring a clearer shape and greater stability.
United do not necessarily require another complete reset. A small number of targeted additions could strengthen the foundations Carrick established last season.
