Though signed as a left-back to play left wing-back, Patrick Dorgu has undergone an evolution at Manchester United, and he is now seen as a left winger.
This positional shift means the 20-time English champions have one senior left-back to rely on: Luke Shaw.
Shaw proved ever-present last term, starting each of United’s league games last season. However, as jam-packed as the Red Devils’ fixtures are expected to be, with Champions League football returning and a better run in the domestic cup competitions anticipated, Shaw cannot be solely depended upon to play all these games.

Fortunately, Ineos recognise this, which is why they are looking to bring in another left-back.
Lewis Hall and Antonee Robinson have emerged as the top targets to answer that transfer need.
Yet, as secretive as Manchester United have been with their transfers, as seen with the Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans deals arriving out of the blue, a surprise left-back signing could well be on the cards.
Indeed, were it announced that Feyenoord’s left-back “Givairo Reid is signing for Man United”, that would catch many by surprise.

That would be so because United’s link to the twenty-year-old, which Give Me Sport now reveals, is new to many.
Of which about the Eredivisie star, the reputable transfer source says:
“Read is one of the hottest young left-backs in Europe at the moment, having enjoyed two impressive breakout seasons at Feyenoord now. While Liverpool have been the club most heavily linked with the Dutchman, United have also been mentioned in the conversations around Read.
“Given he’d be coming from the Eredivisie, United may be able to land Read for a reasonable price, certainly significantly below the likes of Hall and Balde.”
Perfect for what Carrick is building at Old Trafford
Not many United fans would have watched the Dutch full-back in action.
However, those who have seen him describe a highly versatile, modern full-back, one who combines defensive sturdiness in one-on-one duels with the technical, fleet-footed passing and dribbling ability required to contribute actively to attacking build-up play. Interestingly, he can also play on the right.
If he is indeed all this, then he is exactly the kind of player the Red Devils should sign.
Under Michael Carrick, the club is looking to adopt a possession-based system and become one of the most dominant sides in England, if not Europe. Read will be good for that.
