The Light Blues are still looking for a long term replacement for club icon James Tavernier
Rangers are ‘showing an interest’ in teenage Manchester United star James Overy as Derek McInnes looks for more cover at right back.
The 18-year old was snapped up by the Red Devils in 2024 after impressing in the academy ranks of Perth Glory in his native Australia. Rangers boss McInnes has already signed Ross McCrorie at right back from Bristol City, having previously worked with the Scotsman at Aberdeen, however he is now looking for more cover in this area. Atalanta loanee Ben Godfrey can also be deployed in this area, along with Gers utility man Dujon Sterling.
Former skipper James Tavernier concluded his 11-year stay at the club in May upon the expiration of his Ibrox contract. The Englishman made 565 appearances and scored 144 goals for the club as his departure signified the end of an era in Govan. McCrorie looks the likely candidate to take over at right back for the upcoming campaign, but the Gers are also looking for longer-term options in this area.

Rangers ‘showing an interest’ in United prodigy
According to GiveMeSport: “Rangers are showing an interest in signing a Manchester United defender in the summer transfer window. Overy made the move to Manchester United from Perth Glory back in 2024. He is a right back who is capable of pushing into the final third, and he's eligible to play for both Australia and Scotland.”
The defender headed to the other side of the world at the age of 16 and has subsequently signed his first ever professional contract at Old Trafford. He is yet to make his full United debut but continues to impress in the youth ranks. He grew up in Perth, Western Australia, but qualifies to play for Scotland through his mother. Earlier in his career, he featured for the Under-19s squad, but has since represented the Socceroos at other youth levels.

Gers tasked with replacing Tavernier
The Light Blues don’t only have to replace the defender in his position but also his quality from dead-ball situations, given his number over the past decade. Upon leaving the club, Tavernier bid a heartwarming farewell. He told the club: “To the fans, my teammates and all the staff at the club. After a lot of thought, I've made the decision that this will be my final season at the club.
“This hasn't been an easy decision. This club has been a huge part of my life and my family's over the past 11 years. It's given me so much, both on and off the pitch and from the moment I arrived, I've always tried to give everything I had to represent it in the right way.
To have had the honour of being made captain of this club since 2018 is something I will always be incredibly proud of. Leading this team out, wearing the armband and being trusted in that role has meant more to me than I can properly put into words.”
