Manchester United have an agreement in principle with Roma midfielder Manu and are now negotiating a suitable fee with the Serie A outfit, according to Corriere dello Sport.
The Red Devils have already reinforced their midfield with the signings of Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, but they are determined to bring in a third midfielder before the new season.
Kone has emerged as a top target. The Frenchman has already opened the door for a transfer, and Corriere dello Sport claim that United have agreed a ‘deal in principle’ with the player’s camp.
The club are prepared to pay closer to £43 million for the 25-year-old, but Roma are looking for at least £52m to part ways with the former Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder.
It is reported that Al-Ahli’s entry into the picture could have an impact. Chelsea are also named as candidates to sign Kone if they can free up space with another midfield exit.
Man Utd need to speed up talks after Al-Ahli join race
Saudi Pro League giants Al-Ahli have reportedly opened initial talks with Kone’s entourage, and this is a potential warning sign for the Red Devils in the Frenchman’s pursuit.
Kone has established himself as one of the best midfielders in Serie A, and he went on to impress for France at the World Cup, capitalising on Aurelien Tchouameni’s injury.
The 25-year-old has superb ball-playing ability and is also good at winning duels and tackles. He possesses a tireless work rate and good physical presence in midfield.
Santos and Tielemans are more central midfielders, who like to deliver penetrating forward passes. Kone is more defensive-minded, which United may also want in the squad.
At the moment, there is a gap of around £9m in the valuation between the clubs, and United should seek to find a middle ground soon, or they could lose his services to Al-Ahli.
Kone is presently on £85,000 per week as a basic salary, and United could be willing to double his wages to bring him to Old Trafford during the ongoing transfer window.
Al-Ahli, on the other hand, could easily pay Kone £300,000 per week with the huge funds coming from PIF. Kone’s resolve could be tested if such a situation comes about.
United have already seen Al-Hilal clinch Summerville’s signature for £55m upfront, and need to try and secure an early deal for Kone to avoid missing out on his services.
