It is a pivotal summer transfer for Newcastle United after losing key players in Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali. Eddie Howe is tasked with returning the club to European football and won't have an easy task as he attempts to hang on to club captain Bruno Fernandes.
The Brazil international has long been linked with a move to Arsenal, but the most recent approach did nothing to sway the Magpies in their position of wanting to keep the midfielder. Hopefully, there will be no repeats of last year's Alexander Isak saga.
Newcastle are making some headway with incoming moves. Bazoumana Toure, Sean Steur and Ewen Jaouen are all through the door, and are set to be joined by Monaco's Aladji Bamba.
But with proven talent being replaced by Premier League rookies, there will be a great deal of anticipation over what the next month or so holds in the transfer market. ChronicleLive takes a look at some of the latest rumours.
Newcastle to 'heat up'
Former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness, who now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs, believes that Newcastle's transfer window is about to 'heat up'. The ex-Toffees chief reckons with the end of the World Cup we are now amid a busy time in the window.
"Newcastle have got some serious issues right now. They've got to bring in some marquee players. They know it," Wyness told Football Insider.
"They've lost some of their talismen and this is really another difficult window for Newcastle. Now the World Cup's finished though, I do expect their window to heat up considerably.
"I think this week could be one of the busiest weeks of the transfer window. Maybe not in actual announcements but in terms of the work being done behind the scenes because that's how it works.
"It'll take a lot of work before an announcement actually happens, but I do expect a lot to have happened over the weekend and this week as well with the World Cup now completed."
Chronicle Live says: "While Newcastle have been plucking away in the transfer market, they will be all too aware of why they must soon pick up the pace. Last summer saw Isak's late exit, and the last-minute arrivals of Nick Woltemade and Yoanne Wissa. Quite simply, they weren't ready to start the season.
"With big players leaving, and Bruno the subject of intense speculation, Newcastle cannot afford to repeat the situation and need players ready for the season kicking off."

Willock talks continue
Newcastle are said to remain in talks with Besiktas over the transfer of Joe Willock, according to TEAMtalk. The Magpies have left the door open for his exit, with the midfielder now in the final year of his contract.
It is claimed Willock has been informed that a new deal is not part of the club's plans, and the former Arsenal youngster is said to be keen on the move.
Chronicle Live says: "It is time for Willock to move on and Newcastle must do their best to bring in a reasonable fee for the 26-year-old rather than lose him for free in 12 months. Willock has been a handy servant, but at a time when Newcastle want to upgrade their team, there is little use hanging on to a squad player.
Deal done
Newcastle have completed the deal to bring Kyle Healy-Matthews to the club from West Ham, according to Fabrizio Romano. The Magpies have been closing in on the 16-year-old's signature for the last month.
Healy-Matthews is a signing for the academy and will join as a first-year scholar. He is likely to be handed a professional deal once he turns 17 later this year.
ChronicleLive understands that Newcastle are set to make two or three more Academy signings this summer.
Chronicle Live says: Recent seasons have seen the club place greater emphasis on improving their academy and that continues to be the case. Getting a deal even for a youngster in place early is important, as opportunities throughout the age groups come into play while first-team stars make staggered returns for pre-season.
