Manchester United may need to break their own transfer rule to solve the dilemma surrounding Marcus Rashford's immediate future. The winger is set to return to Old Trafford ahead of the new Premier League season, having represented England at the World Cup. He spent last season on loan at Barcelona and wanted to stay there permanently, but they decided against triggering their £26million purchase clause.
Instead, the Catalan giants chose to spend £69m on the signing of Anthony Gordon before striking another deal to land Karim Adeyemi. As such, it's unclear where Rashford will be playing his football with the return of the Premier League looming large. He hasn't played for the Red Devils since 2024 but remains tied down at Old Trafford for another two years.
The forward is currently away on holiday after returning from World Cup duty, but he may be finding it hard to truly switch off given the uncertainty surrounding his future.
Any prospect of Rashford moving to Barca appears dead and buried and, as things stand, the likeliest scenario is that he will head back to United, the club he believed he'd departed for good.
United are keen to recoup their investment and believed his outstanding campaign with Barca would make this process simple.
However, the Catalan club's efforts to arrange another loan spell, instead of paying the agreed £26m release clause, frustrated United officials and ultimately severed that option.
The other substantial obstacle is Rashford's salary. He is earning £325,000 per week at United, having penned a lucrative five-year contract in July 2023.
Those terms have effectively trapped Rashford, placing him beyond the reach of other clubs.
He was prepared to accept a considerable wage reduction to move to Barcelona, but that didn't materialise. Now, should he wish to depart United this summer, he needs the club to play ball.

The only sides who realistically possess the financial capability to acquire Rashford are in the Premier League.
It's been reported that Tottenham, Chelsea and Arsenal have been monitoring his situation, though United don't want to conduct business with a domestic rival.
While his achievements with Barcelona were regarded favourably last season, the prospect of their academy product excelling in the Premier League is proving a significant barrier to his departure.
United have bolstered their midfield this summer through the acquisitions of Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos, with the sale of Rasmus Hojlund and the exits of Casemiro and Jadon Sancho helping release funds.
Yet Rashford remains the largest piece of the puzzle still awaiting resolution.
Michael Carrick enjoys a strong rapport with Rashford, who is believed to hold no grudges towards the club following Ruben Amorim's departure. At present, he is scheduled to link up with the United squad for their Irish training camp in early August.
Should that change, then Rashford will need United to break their own strict rule to allow him to leave.
