Wilcox means business: Man Utd identify 'extraordinary' star as next midfield signing - report

Manchester United have identified who they want to bring in as their next midfield signing, according to The Guardian.

The Red Devils have prioritised a midfield rebuild during the transfer window this summer, completing a deal worth £48m plus £2m in add-ons for Brazilian Andrey Santos, while they also triggered the £35m release clause of Belgium captain Youri Tielemans.

But a third signing is anticipated following Casemiro's departure at the end of his contract and Manuel Ugarte's serious knee injury at the World Cup, and the club have now narrowed down their shortlist of options.

According to Jamie Jackson, Man Utd have identified Real Madrid star Eduardo Camavinga as their next midfield transfer.

Camavinga, who has been described as 'exceptional', has fallen down the pecking order at the Bernabeu in recent years, and Jose Mourinho is understood to be willing to sanction his exit in order to fund a move for Man City and Spain star Rodri.

The 23-year-old still has three years remaining on his contract in Madrid, which contains a €1bn (£857m) release clause, but it's understood that the 15-time European champions would be open to considering a sale for between €50m and €60m (£42m - £51m).

The France international missed out on a spot in the World Cup squad this summer as a result of his limited game time. However, Camavinga wants to stay at Real Madrid and fight for his future, having considered it a dream to play for the club as a youngster.

United have a long-standing interest in Camavinga, having tried to sign him from Rennes as a teenager, only for him to opt to move to Real Madrid instead. But as they search for a more defensive-minded midfielder who can win the ball back, he is back on their shortlist and they are ready to make a move if given any encouragement.

Camavinga a Worthy Gamble

When a talent like Camavinga becomes available on the market, there is usually an abundance of interest, and that will be the same here. But Man Utd have the funds and a place in their midfield to offer him that makes them a very favourable destination.

One concern would be the player's injury record, however. The Frenchman has dealt with a number of issues over the years, and the physicality of the Premier League could be an issue. But regular game time and rhythm could help that, and his talent means it's certainly a gamble worth taking.

At £51m, the value on the deal is excellent too when comparing to other midfield deals this summer, and this is a very live situation that should be looked at in the coming weeks.
