Yet his massive salary presents a massive stumbling block for most suitors. While Carrick could theoretically welcome him back into the first team, his recent public remarks suggest that door is firmly shut.
Then there is Joshua Zirkzee. Valued at around £30m, the Dutch striker presents a different kind of headache altogether. He arrived from Bologna in 2024 and grabbed headlines with a debut goal, but things went flat very quickly after that. Tied to the club until 2029 and now 25, he should still fetch a respectable sum. Juventus are keeping close tabs on his situation. Zirkzee accepts that he needs to pack his bags if he wants regular football, and a return to Serie A makes total sense for everyone involved.
Goalkeepers and young prospects on the move
Lower down the roster, the picture gets far clearer. Radek Vitek is eager for a fresh start. Rated at £10m, the reserve goalkeeper made it clear he wants a guaranteed starting spot after a successful loan spell at Bristol City. With Senne Lammens firmly established as the primary stopper, Vitek simply has no route into the starting eleven.
Altay Bayindir looks just as likely to pack his bags. The Turkish international is valued at around £5m, but the arrival of Karl Darlow alongside Tom Heaton’s new contract leaves him entirely surplus to requirements. The Sun reported that Bayindir was granted extended leave ahead of a permanent move away, with Besiktas lingering as a potential destination.
The academy products are also drawing genuine interest. Midfielder Toby Collyer, valued at £3m, split his previous season across two Championship loans. He finished his campaign with Hull, who are now mulling over a permanent bid following their promotion through the play-offs. Inserting a smart sell-on clause into any deal would be sensible business.
Meanwhile, centre-back Tyler Fredricson missed out on United’s pre-season squad against Wrexham, a decision that points straight to a summer transfer. Valued at just over £2m by Transfermarkt, he was previously targeted by Celtic in January before an injury put negotiations on ice. The Scottish club could easily revive that interest now.
