Manchester United's next step will be fascinating as the transfer window gathers momentum following the World Cup.

A pivotal summer is unfolding at Old Trafford as the club seeks to capitalise on what Michael Carrick achieved over the second half of last season. With Champions League football a welcome addition to the fixture list, United required reinforcements to their squad.

The middle of the pitch was - and continues to be - a priority and headway has already been achieved in that area, with Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans joining from Chelsea and Aston Villa, respectively.

French duo Manu Kone of Roma and Real Madrid's Aurelien Tchouameni remain under consideration, though a potential deal for Bournemouth's Alex Scott is off, with United reluctant to meet the Cherries' £70m asking price. Following Friday's friendly away to Rosenborg, here's a summary of the latest United developments...

Mourinho 'ready' to sanction deal

Jose Mourinho is believed to be prepared to allow Aurelien Tchouameni to depart for United to help Real Madrid finance a move for Manchester City's Rodri. Tchouameni has been linked with the Reds throughout the summer.

With France's underwhelming World Cup exit now behind him, Tchouameni is free to determine his next move, which appears to be away from Real, who have re-appointed ex-United boss Mourinho as manager.

United are among the frontrunners to secure the £68m-rated defensive midfielder. Per to The Sun, should Real successfully offload Tchouameni for the aforementioned sum, it would provide the funds to mount a bid for Rodri.

The 30-year-old, fresh from lifting the World Cup with Spain, is valued at around £85m but has just 12 months remaining on his City contract. While Mourinho is reluctant to part with Tchouameni, he would be willing to sanction a sale if it paves the way for Rodri's arrival.

United consider Adams

Having been priced out of a move for Scott, United could turn their attention to one of his Bournemouth team-mates, Tyler Adams. According to the Daily Mail, the US international is available for around £35m, roughly half of what the Cherries are demanding for Scott.

While United are prepared to back Carrick further in the transfer market, shrewd deals will help balance the PSR books. Like Scott, Adams, 27, has two years remaining on his contract and fits the profile of what United are seeking in a defensive midfielder.

His running and tackling statistics compared favourably with those of his peers last season. Adams had been linked with a January switch to United, only to sustain a knee injury in Bournemouth's 4-4 draw at Old Trafford in December, sidelining him for two months.
