Manchester United are reportedly ready to 'upset the odds' and beat Juventus to the signing of Bologna centre‑back Jhon Lucumi. The 28-year-old has emerged as a potential target at Old Trafford.
The Colombian World Cup star is entering the final year of his contract and speculation over his future is growing, with several European clubs monitoring his situation. Reports from Italy claim Premier League sides AFC Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest have made proposals, though the defender has reportedly put both clubs 'on hold' for now.
Lucumi is also said to have attracted approaches from unnamed Turkish sides this summer. After making five appearances for Colombia at the recent World Cup, all of them starts, Lucumi is believed to be waiting to see whether further offers arrive.
It is claimed that Serie A giants Juventus and Inter Milan are among the possible destinations. There have also been suggestions that United could look to intensify their interest.
And Italian publication Corriere dello Sport now claim that the Reds have been fancied to sign Lucumi ahead of Juventus
It is said that the Colombian's £24million release clause recently expired and that Juventus tried to sign him for £15.4m, but the proposal was swiftly turned down. The Bianconeri were reportedly looking to capitalise on the player’s contract, which expires in June next year, but Bologna are unlikely to provide any discount for a transfer.
The report adds that Juventus have growing fears of competition from Michael Carrick's side, claiming United could trump them for the left-footed star with a higher offer.
The news comes amid fears over Lisandro Martinez's latest injury. The Argentine was a first-half casualty during the World Cup final after going down injured against Spain last weekend.

The 28-year-old thanked fans for their encouraging messages and support during a difficult time after his nation lost 1-0 in New York after extra time. Speaking to Cronica, he said: “First of all, I’d like to thank everyone for their messages and support during this difficult time.
“I can see that many of you are disappointed, and I know that many of you have been praying for my speedy recovery – that means the world to me. Losing with Argentina in the World Cup hurt a lot, but these things happen in football.
'The Butcher' went on to insist that he is working to get back to full fitness. He added: “Injuries are part of the game, and right now I’m focused on getting back to 100 per cent.”
Martinez also acknowledged United’s role in his career and insisted that he remains committed to repaying them on the pitch.
He said: “I’m working hard every day to come back stronger for the new season with Manchester United. This club and the fans have given me everything. I can’t wait to repay them on the pitch. Thank you for your support. See you soon at Old Trafford.”
