Manchester United are moving ‘extremely slowly’ for Roma midfielder Manu Kone, according to Corriere dello Sport (page 14).
The Red Devils have already spent big in the midfield department this summer, signing Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans.
They are still keen on landing a more defensive-minded midfielder, and Kone’s name has been frequently mentioned this month.
It has been reported that United have a ‘deal in principle‘ with the player and they could soon make a formal approach to Roma.
However, Corriere dello Sport today claim that the Red Devils are not rushing with a decision on Kone despite Roma’s urgency.
The Giallorossi require a huge capital gain before the UEFA settlement deadline, which was agreed and extended to July 31.
United are continuing to monitor Kone, but they are moving ‘extremely slowly’ and have yet to present a formal transfer bid.
United have second thoughts over signing Kone
It was recently reported that United value Kone at £42 million, but Roma are looking for at least £51m to part ways with the 25-year-old.
Since then, it has emerged that there is no universal internal backing within the club’s hierarchy to pursue a deal for the France international.
United obviously have second thoughts over signing Kone. The 25-year-old can operate as a holding or central midfielder as required.
However, he has played as a number eight for two-thirds of his career. At Roma, he has been successful as a left-sided central midfielder.
United should have the position covered next term with Kobbie Mainoo, and the hierarchy probably want someone with better defensive traits.
With Real Madrid pushing to land Rodri, it could open the door for Aurelien Tchouameni’s exit.
Los Blancos are ‘willing to sell’ him to United for the ‘right price‘. United could be prepared to spend big on him rather than his compatriot Kone.
It could be a possible reason why they have slowed down their pursuit of the Roma ace.
