Manchester United will be hoping to mount a Premier League title challenge this season, but they'll need to move smartly in the transfer market. The prospect of fighting at the very front was nothing more than a pipe dream only a few months ago, but their recent resurgence under Michael Carrick has delivered a fresh wave of optimism.
Of course, a strong transfer window will be needed if United are serious about knocking Arsenal off their perch. They have already completed a number of signings, with the likes of Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans arriving at Old Trafford. However, they could steal a march on their rivals by tapping into the free agents market and unearthing some potential gems.

Dusan Vlahovic
Arguably the most attractive name on this list, the former Juventus striker would be a solid understudy to Benjamin Sesko next season.
With a total of 27 club goals over the last two seasons, he certainly knows where the onion bag is, and there is still plenty of room for improvement given that he is only 26. A low-risk and potentially high-reward signing on a free transfer, what's not to like?
John Stones
United have been widely tipped to sign a new centre-back this summer, especially if Matthijs de Ligt moves on, and they could do far worse than to try an ambitious swoop for John Stones.
He remains more than capable of playing at the highest level and would offer plenty of trophy-winning experience. However, his long-standing association with Manchester City could make any potential move a non-starter.

Franck Kessie
Even though United have already signed two central midfielders this summer, they are still believed to be in the market for a third addition.
Franck Kessie was one of Europe's most coveted names only a few seasons ago, but now finds himself without a club. He could do a job for the Red Devils next season, providing crucial strength in depth as they return to European football after a year out.
Dani Carvajal
The veteran right-back would be a solid pickup for United, purely for the experience he would bring to the dressing room. He is a born winner and his presence would do wonders for some of the younger members of the squad.
He wouldn't be expected to start many games, but successful teams need players like him when the going gets tough, which it inevitably will over the course of a 38-game season.
