Manchester United's new midfield is beginning to take shape after the first two matches of pre-season under Michael Carrick.
Andrey Santos has started both matches alongside Mason Mount in the double pivot with Jack Fletcher (against Wrexham) or Shea Lacey (against Rosenborg) playing ahead of them as the No.10.
Santos moved to Old Trafford earlier this month for £48 million, with another £2 million worth of add-ons also included in the deal. He was soon followed by backup goalkeeper Karl Darlow and Aston Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans.
Reports have said that United are still targeting a third midfield signing this summer, although there appear to still be several names on the shortlist. The likes of Alex Scott and Manu Kone seem the most likely at the moment, but there is a chance Aurelién Tchouaméni could still be available.
When it was reported that Aurelién Tchouaméni would sign a new contract at Real Madrid, many Manchester United fans gave up hope that he could become a Red Devils player this summer. But there seems to still be a chance.
Andy Mitten has reported that while Real Madrid have handed Tchouaméni a new deal, they did so before they were aware that Manchester City midfielder Rodri was available.
Real Madrid are looking at their options this summer, and if they decide to sell the French international, they will now be able to ask for a higher fee due to the length of his new deal.
Mitten continued to say that United understand that Tchouaméni is happy at Real Madrid, but they have held a long admiration for him.
Tchouaméni's high wages – combined with what will be a high transfer fee – will be the biggest obstacle in a potential deal.
Santos and Tielemans are two great additions to Michael Carrick's side, but neither of them is an out-and-out defensive midfielder. Both would be recognised as more box-to-box options.
Kobbie Mainoo and Mason Mount are similar, too. When they play in a double pivot, they can operate as the deepest midfielder, but they play their best football when allowed to advance up the pitch.
Tchouaméni would be the direct replacement for Casemiro, who has now become an Inter Miami player, while the other players could also fill in when necessary.
Carrick will know how important true defensive midfielder can be for a side, given he was one of the best in the world under Sir Alex Ferguson.
