Juventus are aiming to receive around 9m euros from the sale of Joao Mario this summer as Fiorentina step up their interest in signing the full-back during the current transfer window.
The defender only joined Juventus a year ago, but he quickly fell out of favour after Luciano Spalletti arrived in Turin. As a result, he was sent on loan to Bologna during the second half of last season in search of regular playing time.
Fiorentina lead the race
Mario impressed during his spell at Bologna and established himself as one of the club’s best performers. His displays suggested Bologna would be interested in keeping him, and they remain keen to do so.
However, the arrangement involving Bologna was part of a swap deal, and Juventus have already sent Emil Holm back to the club. Unless Bologna sell the Swedish defender, they are unable to pursue a permanent move for Mario.
According to Gianluca di Marzio, Fiorentina have now moved into a stronger position after opening talks with Juventus over a potential transfer. Their interest has given them an advantage in the race for the defender’s signature.

Fiorentina are eager to complete a deal this summer, and both clubs are working towards an agreement based on a loan move with an option to buy worth 9m euros at the end of the season.
Mario enjoyed his time at Bologna and is unlikely to want a return to the Juventus bench, particularly after falling out of Spalletti’s plans. A move to Fiorentina would offer him the opportunity to continue playing regular first-team football and demonstrate his qualities at the highest level.
Juventus are also prepared to part ways with the defender if their valuation is met, allowing them to continue reshaping the squad. The coming weeks could prove decisive as Fiorentina attempt to finalise an agreement, and Mario looks to secure a move that could provide him with a fresh start.
