Manchester United's priority for the time being will remain solving their midfield issues after Casemiro left the club and Manuel Ugarte suffered an ACL injury at the World Cup.
Andrey Santos has formed a good partnership with Mason Mount during pre-season, as Michael Carrick's side begins preparations for their first season back in the Champions League since 2023/24 under Erik ten Hag.
Santos moved to Old Trafford for £48 million, plus an additional £2 million in add-ons; various reports have said that United are expecting the transfer to rise to the full £50 million.
Karl Darlow, Youri Tielemans and Tynan Thompson have all followed Santos, but have not featured in pre-season for various reasons.
United will continue to focus on outgoings, too. Juventus could offer the club an opportunity to sell one of their fringe players soon, with the Italian giants "considering a move".
Joshua Zirkzee has started both of Manchester United's pre-season matches as the centre-forward, forcing Bryan Mbeumo to play on the right flank. Benjamin Šeško would ordinarily be the first choice through the middle, but he is continuing to recover from a shin injury that he suffered towards the end of last term.
However, Sky Sports have reported that Juventus are "considering" making a move for United's Dutchman. Kolo Muani (formerly of Tottenham Hotspur) is their first choice, but Zirkzee is an option.
As a Bologna player, Zirkzee was very impressive in Serie A and could favour a return to Italy to allow him to get back to his best form after a difficult time at Manchester United.
There is a player there. Joshua Zirkzee is a very talented footballer and clearly a very likeable character in the dressing room, but he is not delivering on the pitch often enough.
Last season, Zirkzee scored two goals in 26 appearances. He netted just one assist, too. In 2024/25, he scored seven and assisted two in 49 matches.
That just is not good enough for a Manchester United attacker.
Zirkzee continually produces moments of magic – as he did for his magnificent goal against Rosenborg – but they do not occur regularly enough.
If he stays, he could be a handy squad option in the cup competitions. But if he leaves, United will add some money to their transfer budget to sign another forward whom Benjamin Šeško can learn from. Shea Lacey or JJ Gabriel can take the minutes Zirkzee would have played.
Selling Zirkzee would be the best move for all parties.
