Since arriving at Manchester United from the Czech Republic in 2020, Radek Vítek has steadily progressed through the club's academy, gaining valuable senior experience through a series of loan spells. Each temporary move helped the young goalkeeper develop his game, as it looked likely that United were preparing to welcome Vitek into the first-team squad in the near future.
Last season, Vítek was loaned to the Championship with Bristol City. Although he initially arrived as cover, an injury to the club's first-choice goalkeeper presented him with an unexpected opportunity. The 21-year-old seized his chance, quickly establishing himself as the club's preferred option between the posts.
Vítek's performances throughout the campaign were among the most consistent in Bristol City's squad, helping him retain his place for the remainder of the season as the Robins finished 12th in the Championship. His impressive displays were recognised at the club's end-of-season awards, where he completed a remarkable hat-trick by winning Player of the Year, Young Player of the Year and Players' Player of the Year.
The awards marked another significant milestone in Vítek's development and underlined the progress he had made since joining United. With his reputation continuing to grow, many supporters were hopeful the Czech goalkeeper would be given an opportunity to prove himself at Old Trafford and compete for a place in the senior squad.
While some United fans would have hoped that his impressive performances last season meant that he would return to Old Trafford and be a backup to Senne Lammens, that doesn't seem to be the case.
Despite playing in both pre-season games so far, the goalkeeper has stated that he is ready for another move and to be number one, saying he is open to either another loan or a permanent move.
As a result, several clubs have started to enquire about the 22-year-old, with GiveMeSport reporting that Middlesbrough have expressed interest in signing the Czech goalkeeper.
The outlet reports that the North East club are the frontrunner to land the 22-year-old. While the deal is said to be very much at a preliminary stage, there is confidence that an agreement could be struck between the two clubs.
After André Onana failed to live up to expectations at Manchester United, the club looked for another keeper to replace the Cameroonian keeper, with Altay Bayındır tasked with starting United's first six fixtures of the 2025/26 Premier League season.
Last summer, United's goalkeeper shortlist reportedly narrowed to Aston Villa's Emi Martinez and Royal Antwerp's young goalkeeper, Senne Lammens.
Martinez is an established Premier League goalkeeper and World Cup winner, so it perhaps came as a bit of a surprise that the club opted to sign the young Belgian goalkeeper over the then 32-year-old.
Things could have been a lot different for Vitek if United had instead opted for Martinez, with a clear path to regular first-team football for the 22-year-old. Instead, Lammens excelled as soon as he was given his first chance against Sunderland, and hasn't looked back since, firmly establishing himself as the clear number one.
Now, with both Tom Heaton and Karl Darlow as backups for Lammens, Vitek has found himself at a bit of a career crossroads already, and could end up being sold permanently to help raise funds for United's summer spending.
