Manchester United are continuing to assess the transfer market as the final weeks of the summer window approach, with the club still expected to add to Michael Carrick's squad before the deadline. While several new faces have already arrived at Old Trafford, recruitment plans remain active as United look to ensure they are fully equipped for the challenges that lie ahead.
The Reds have enjoyed a productive summer, securing the signings of Andrey Santos from Chelsea, experienced goalkeeper Karl Darlow on a free transfer, midfielder Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa, and highly-rated youngster Tynan Thompson from Tottenham Hotspur. The mix of established quality and emerging talent underlines the club's strategy of strengthening both the immediate first-team squad and its long-term future.
Santos has been the standout addition in pre-season, with the Brazilian already making a positive impact in friendlies against Wrexham and Rosenborg. His composure on the ball and intelligent positioning have caught the eye, while his developing understanding alongside Mason Mount has provided encouragement ahead of the new campaign. Darlow and Thompson, meanwhile, have been using pre-season to integrate into Carrick's setup as they continue adapting to their new surroundings.
Despite those arrivals, United's transfer business is not expected to end there. The club are understood to be monitoring a number of potential targets, with reinforcements at left-back and on the left wing remaining priorities. There is also the possibility of another striker arriving before the window closes, as Carrick looks to assemble a squad with the depth and quality required to compete in both the Premier League and the Champions League.
Luke Shaw did well to be available for the whole of last season, but with a much more congested fixture schedule next season, United will be looking at full-back reinforcements as Carrick looks to add key depth to the squad.
As a result, various left-backs have been linked with a move to Old Trafford, but Newcastle's Lewis Hall is reported to be top of that list, with the highly rated 21-year-old potentially on the move this summer.
Quickly establishing himself as one of the best left-back prospects in Europe, Andy Mitten, via The National, has said that INEOS wouldn't be targeting certain players if they didn't believe that they wanted to play for the club.
This aligns with previous reports that Hall saw the opportunity to work under Carrick and establish himself at United as a very attractive prospect, and that he would be happy to compete for a starting spot with Shaw.
Manchester United are still weighing up several defensive options to provide competition for Shaw, with reports indicating that Djed Spence, Neco Williams and Antonee Robinson have been looked at.
With that being said, Hall simply has to be the main left-back target this summer, and must do everything they can to secure the signing of a left-back that would lock down that position for years to come.
A rift seemingly appeared between Hall and Eddie Howe towards the end of last season, dropping him from the squad despite his key role and playing him out of position, resulting in his omission from Thomas Tuchel's World Cup squad.
The outlet stated that Newcastle have set their asking price for their star at around £55 million, and with United struggling to sell players for decent fees, they could be forced to pivot to secondary options within their budget.
