Manchester United have already recruited three new first-team players, and another three could be on the way.
The Red Devils made back-to-back signings in the middle of the park, buying Andrey Santos from Chelsea for £48 million and activating Youri Tielemans’ £35 million release clause.
INEOS also brought in 35-year-old goalkeeper Karl Darlow on a free transfer from Leeds United, not to mention snapping up two teenagers in Tynan Thompson and Kit Margetson, who will likely join the U21 ranks.
Man United eyeing new midfielder, striker & left-back
After adding three new players to Michael Carrick’s squad, Man Utd are only halfway through their summer business.
According to The Athletic journalist Laurie Whitwell, United still have three slots to fill in the first team.
The most obvious department to bolster remains the middle of the park, as the club still needs a fourth midfielder to join Santos, Tielemans, and Kobbie Mainoo. MUFC have lost the services of Casemiro, who joined Inter Miami on a free transfer, while Manuel Ugarte could be out for the bulk of the campaign with an ACL tear.
Moreover, Man Utd need a new left-back who can take some of the burden off Luke Shaw’s shoulders. Whitwell reveals that the club is open to cashing in on Harry Amass, while Newcastle’s Lewis Hall is the primary target for the role.
Finally, the Old Trafford outfit needs a new centre-forward who can share playing time with Benjamin Sesko.
The source mentioned bringing back Danny Welbeck, who has been linked with a return to Carrington in the last two summers. But at this stage, the 35-year-old Brighton star is much more likely to sign for Chelsea.
Who could Man Utd sign for each role?
For the midfielder role, sources in Italy, England and Spain are torn between Manu Kone and Aurelien Tchouameni. The two French internationals appear to be at the top of the shortlist.
Whitwell also mentions Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, but admits that the 22-year-old would likely end up at Chelsea should he leave the Cherries this summer.
While Hall appears to be the ultimate target at left-back, Man United have been sporadically linked with others, including Antonee Robinson.
Finally, the striker shortlist remains shrouded in mystery, but perhaps INEOS will rekindle their interest in some of their old targets, including Ollie Watkins, Dusan Vlahovic, and Victor Osimhen. But at the moment, United must make room for a new arrival by offloading Joshua Zirkzee, who is heavily linked with a return to Italy, particularly to Juventus.
