Whitwell discloses ‘likeliest destination’ for concrete Man United target after £64m bid

Chelsea has been deemed Alex Scott’s ‘likeliest destination’ if he were to depart the Vitality Stadium this summer.

That’s according to The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell, who adds that the Blues had a £64 million bid rejected by Bournemouth for the youngster.

Alex Scott: The state of play amid Chelsea pursuit

Whitwell also states that ‘work has been done’ by Manchester United to try and facilitate a deal for Scott, but they haven’t materialised their interest by submitting a bid like Chelsea.

One factor that would likely put United above Chelsea in the player’s estimations is that Champions League football will be returning to Old Trafford next term, whereas Xabi Alonso will be navigating his maiden campaign without any European action to account for.

Scott will be well aware that game time in the middle of the park is also increasingly difficult to come by at Stamford Bridge due to Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo, both of whom commanded transfer fees in excess of £100m, being two of the first names on the teamsheet.

That’s why Andrey Santos opted to complete a move to United after spending only one full season with Chelsea, as he just wasn’t being granted enough game time or opportunities.

INEOS shortlist Scott after double midfield deals

United have set their sights on Scott becoming their third midfield addition this summer, following their acquisitions of Santos and Youri Tielemans in quick succession.

However, the 22-year-old is only one name on a list of several candidates, including the likes of Carlos Baleba, Manu Kone and Aurelien Tchouameni.

It’s thought that the latter would only be on the move if Rodri completes a switch to Real Madrid from Manchester City, who are desperate to keep hold of him and have the newly-crowned World Cup winner extend his contract.
