Manchester United have signed young Welsh goalkeeper Kit Margetson from Swansea City, adding fresh transfer news to their busy summer. The Man United move follows a compensation fee agreed between the two clubs.
Kit Margetson completes Manchester United transfer
As reported by BBC, Swansea City were entitled to a compensation fee for developing Kit Margetson since his under-15 days. This falls under the same academy compensation rules used across English and Welsh football for young players leaving on free transfers. Manchester United have not yet confirmed the exact length of his new contract at Old Trafford.
In an official statement, the club confirmed the signing of the promising young goalkeeper, pending official registration. Swansea also released their own statement, confirming that a financial package had been settled to let the move proceed. Neither club has disclosed the exact figure involved, which is standard practice for these development-based compensation deals.
Margetson’s stats for the 2025-26 season, as per FOTMOB:
Competition Appearances Clean Sheets
Cymru Premier 34 10
Margetson’s rise through Swansea and Connah’s Quay Nomads
Kit Margetson never made a first-team appearance for Swansea, but he still built valuable experience away from Championship football. He spent last season on loan at Connah’s Quay Nomads, playing regular senior football in the Cymru Premier, Wales’ top division. The loan spell proved productive, as he made thirty-four appearances and kept ten clean sheets across the campaign. Those performances helped the Welsh club secure European qualification, with continental football to follow next season.
That good run of form gave selectors enough trust to hand him his Wales Under-21 debut against Belarus in March. His exit from Swansea also comes soon after his father Martyn Margetson stepped down as the club’s head goalkeeping coach. As reported by BBC, Martyn left that role at the end of last season, then later joined the wider Wales national team setup.
What Kit Margetson brings to Manchester United
The Manchester United already strengthened their goalkeeping options this summer by signing Karl Darlow from Leeds United. Margetson is expected to begin with the under-21 squad before pushing for a place among the Premier League regulars.
The timing also fits well into Man United’s busy pre-season schedule as August draws near. As reported by ESPN, Carrick’s side heads into August after a recent solid Rosenborg win. More friendly matches still lie ahead too, against Atletico Madrid, PSG, Leeds and AC Milan. Their league season opens away at Hull City, giving new signings time to settle in first.
Author’s point of view
This signing feels like a smart plan for later, not a fast fix for the first team. Ten clean sheets in thirty-four games is a good record for a young goalkeeper. But Man United’s coaches will want to see how he deals with faster, sharper attacks in the league. They will also watch how well he kicks the ball and controls his own box. This kind of change often needs a full season of steady under-21 games before it shows. If Kit Margetson keeps getting better at this rate, a first-team spot could come in a couple of years.
