Bruno Fernandes has produced his best performance in the last Premier League 2025-26 campaign. He gave record breaking 21 assists surpassing Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne. The Portuguese is still believed to be the main figure of Man United this season. Nevertheless, Dean Saunders believes that Fernandes is not the central figure and is not “not for sale”.
Bruno Fernandes had a memorable 2025-26 campaign
Fernandes had enjoyed a record breaking 2025-26 season. The Manchester United midfielder played the pivotal role in the team from the first matchday to the last. He was there on every occasion helping his team to win and score goals. He had to step up during both the highs and lows as he wears the captain’s armband.
The Portuguese football player was everywhere on the pitch, playing as a defensive, central and attacking midfielder. He provided massive 21 assists in that season for the Red Devils and set a new record. Along with that, he broke the record of Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne’s 20 assists in a season.
After showcasing such a magnificent display throughout the season, Bruno Fernandes owned several awards. He became the Premier League Player of the season and Football Writers’ Association’s(FWA) men’s footballer of the year. The 31-year-old also won the Premier League Golden Playmaker award, according to Manchester United’s official website. His club awarded him with Matt Busby Player of the year award.

Bruno Fernandes is not indispensable and can move on
Man United are planning a huge midfield overhaul this season. After qualifying for Champions League for the first time in three years, the club hierarchy is focused on strengthening the squad. They have already started their mission by signing midfielders, Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans. As reported by Football 365, Man United are interested in Roma midfielder Manu Kone with Carlos Baleba and Danilo being linked.
As reported by talkSPORT, their chief football correspondent, Dean Saunders believes that Bruno Fernandes is not an unsellable asset. He also added that assist is a deceptive statistic. On Friday’s Breakfast Show, he was with Red Devils superfan Alex Crook.
Saunders said, “This assist business, I don’t get it. I asked Jamie O’Hara the other night, how many assists did you get in your career? He went: ‘I don’t know’. I said: ‘Yeah, because no one ever told you and we never counted them’. The assists depend on who you’re playing with. So, for example, if Harry Maguire robs the ball off the centre forward and pokes it to Fernandes and he first times it round the corner for me to go clean through and score, who gets the assist? Harry Maguire or Fernandes? Or both?”
He wanted to say that Fernandes has more assists because he was with better finishers. Alex Crook was not convinced with his opinion but having very little to argue he said, “It’s made a difference that Fernandes was hitting Cunha and Mbeumo and Sesko last season, and not Rasmus Hojlund.”
No argument can undermine Fernandes’ contributions for the club
Crook stuck to his point that Fernandes has produced a brilliant number of goals and assists at the club. Later, Saunders also accepted that the Portuguese’s legacy at the club cannot be denied. Crook made a huge statement by saying that Bruno Fernandes has been the most important figure at the club since Alex Ferguson’s departure.
