The Philadelphia 76ers have had a massive offseason, beginning with the acquisition of Jaylen Brown. That move immediately elevated Philadelphia into the conversation as one of the favorites in the Eastern Conference.
More importantly, it helped pave the way for the franchise to sign four-time NBA champion LeBron James.
“LeBron James is signing with the Philadelphia 76ers for his final run at another NBA championship, he announced Friday," ESPN's Dave McMenamin wrote. "James, 41, is signing a two-year, $8 million contract with a player option, Klutch Sports Group CEO Rich Paul told ESPN's Shams Charania."
With James entering the latter stages of his career, speculation quickly surfaced that a documentary similar to Michael Jordan’s The Last Dance was in the works.
“LeBron James is closing in on a deal with ESPN to do a behind-the-scenes documentary similar to Michael Jordan’s “The Last Dance,” per The Athletic. LeBron will now have ESPN camera crews follow along his final chapter in Philadelphia with the Sixers,” NBA reporter Evan Sidery wrote.
James’ longtime friend and business partner, Maverick Carter, quickly shut down those rumors.
“We are NOT doing anything like the “last dance” LeBron doesn’t even know when his last season is,” Carter wrote.
James also responded by reposting Carter's message, further dismissing the speculation himself.
“Maverick Carter is shooting down speculation of a "Last Dance" documentary of LeBron for ESPN, and LeBron co-signed this message with his retweet,” ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel posted.
While it is widely understood that James is nearing the end of his legendary career, even he does not know exactly when his final season will be. For now, any reports suggesting he plans to retire after next season remain speculation.
James is expected to give everything he has to Philadelphia over the next couple of seasons as he pursues another NBA championship. Retirement speculation will likely continue to follow him, but for now, his focus remains on helping the 76ers compete for a title rather than deciding when his career will come to an end.
