The Cleveland Cavaliers have been pursuing former NBA champion Jonathan Kuminga since he became a restricted free agent. Cleveland was also in the running for LeBron James, which put its pursuit of Kuminga on hold while the franchise explored that opportunity.
With James ultimately signing with the Philadelphia 76ers, the Cavaliers have shifted their full attention back toward Kuminga. However, his contract demands have complicated the process.
“Jonathan Kuminga is demanding a salary in free agency exceeding $20 million annually, per The Athletic. Kuminga prefers a sign-and-trade from the Hawks over leaving outright, simply due to the added financial implications. The Cavaliers and Lakers are the finalists for Kuminga,” NBA reporter Evan Sidery posted.
Kuminga’s asking price could cause Cleveland to explore other options. SI’s Davion Moore believes the Cavaliers could pivot toward restricted free agent Peyton Watson.
“Watson is a 23-year-old wing, and he averaged 14.6 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.1 assists last season. He also shot 41.1 percent from 3-point range. The Nuggets offered him a five-year, $70 million deal, and they are trying to be cautious as they deal with luxury tax issues. Multiple teams are interested in a sign-and-trade situation, and the Cavs can get involved. Watson won a championship back in 2023, and since then, his role has increased. As a result, his stats continue to improve. He is a solid option for the Cavs, and if the others fall through, this may be the way they go,” Moore wrote.
Watson is also looking for a significant contract, but he has built a strong case through his production and role with the Denver Nuggets.
“Peyton Watson and his camp want something in that $28 million north range and the offers so far have been fluctuating between that $20-24 million per year range… When you’re Peyton Watson, you want more than Christian Braun,” ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel wrote.
The biggest appeal with Watson is his potential as a two-way star. His elite athleticism, defensive versatility, and shot-blocking ability give him a skill set that can impact games on both ends of the floor.
A pivot from Kuminga to Watson would not be a bad outcome for Cleveland. Watson already has playoff experience and could provide the Cavaliers with a reliable wing for the future. He may also be easier to negotiate with moving forward, as Kuminga’s contract situation has created challenges for multiple teams throughout his career.
