D'Angelo Russell is expected to hit the buyout market after his trade to the Grizzlies, with no clear landing spot yet but likely interest from teams seeking low-cost guard depth.
D'Angelo Russell's stay with the Memphis Grizzlies could be a short one.
According to ClutchPoints' Brett Siegel on the Clutch Scoops podcast, Russell is expected to become available soon, with Memphis potentially moving toward a buyout for the veteran guard.
"Another guy that is going to be hitting the buyout market maybe this week, maybe next week, whenever they get this done is D'Angelo Russell," Siegel said.
"He will be a free agent," Siegel added. "No intel on where he could end up right now."
Russell recently landed in Memphis as part of a massive six-team offseason trade.
The Grizzlies acquired Russell from the Washington Wizards, along with Isaiah Stewart from the Detroit Pistons, AJ Johnson from the Dallas Mavericks, and multiple future draft assets, including a protected 2030 first-round pick from Dallas.
However, Russell is not expected to be part of Memphis' long-term plans.
Russell could become one of top guard options
If Russell reaches the open market, he could immediately become one of the more notable minimum-contract guards available.
"There's going to be teams looking for guards on a minimum contract," Siegel said.
The veteran guard was mentioned alongside Russell Westbrook, Gabe Vincent, and Brandon Williams as possible guard options for teams still looking to complete their rosters.
At this stage, however, there is no clear landing spot for Russell.
Russell has bounced around since Lakers start
Russell entered the NBA as one of the top prospects of his draft class, being selected by the Los Angeles Lakers with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft.
After two seasons in Los Angeles, he was traded to the Brooklyn Nets in 2017 in a deal that sent Brook Lopez and the draft rights to Kyle Kuzma to the Lakers.
His best individual stretch came in Brooklyn, where he became an All-Star in 2019. Russell was named as an injury replacement for Victor Oladipo, earning the first All-Star selection of his career and becoming the Nets' first All-Star since Joe Johnson in 2014.
Russell later had stops with the Golden State Warriors, Minnesota Timberwolves, and a second stint with the Lakers before continuing his career with Brooklyn and Dallas.
His career averages stand at 17.0 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 5.6 assists over 655 regular-season games.
The veteran guard spent last season with the Mavs, appearing in just 26 games before being moved to Memphis as part of the six-team trade.
