Andre Drummond warms up before a 76ers playoff game against the Knicks
The Knicks did not replace every outgoing big man with a matching name and a matching role. They chose a one-year Andre Drummond bet, and the narrowness of that bet is the whole point.
Drummond is here to rebound, use his size, finish a shift without the game getting away from him, and keep the second unit from getting pushed around. Asking for more than that is where this can get messy.
The NBA’s July 30 transaction roundup listed Drummond as New York’s center addition after the club’s summer turnover. It is a cheap, clear answer to a very specific question: who can soak up regular-season work in the paint without forcing the Knicks to remake their identity?
I actually like the honesty of it. Nobody is pretending that one signing recreates every part of the frontcourt that left. The Knicks are betting that the rotation needs a grown center more than it needs another project.

Andre Drummond has one Knicks job
Andre Drummond still rebounds at a rate that can change a possession. He can protect a tired lineup from giving away extra chances, and he can give the starters a real breather without automatically shifting every matchup against New York.
There are limits. He is not getting picked to chase quick guards 30 feet from the rim, and the Knicks should not build late-game offense around him. That works. Every bench big does not need to be a Swiss Army knife.
The best version of this signing is boring in the good way. Drummond plays physical, wins the glass, gets off the floor when the matchup says he should, and lets the better players handle the rest.
It would have been easy to chase a familiar name or spend more money trying to make the center spot feel comfortable. New York went the other direction. The roster has stars who need space and guards who need somebody to clean up misses, so the assignment is simple.
Drummond can help if he stays inside that assignment. The Knicks are not asking him to be a savior. They are asking him to do the work that keeps a second unit from bleeding points and possessions.
