Spurs have assets to pair Stephen Curry with Victor Wembanyama image
The San Antonio Spurs entered the NBA Finals as clear favorites, but they ended up losing the series 4-1 to the underdog New York Knicks.
Critics noted that the Spurs' young core struggled under pressure in crunch time, dropping three close matches by four points or fewer. Meanwhile, Jalen Brunson and his experienced Knicks roster executed flawlessly, capitalizing on the Spurs' last-minute blunder to secure the championship.
So now, everyone is wondering what the front office can add around Victor Wembanyama to close that gap. The Finals loss made it obvious that the team is missing a champion figure who can settle things down.
The Spurs already made a huge splash by trading for De'Aaron Fox, but Bill Simmons thinks they need an even bigger name. He believes the front office should go all in on a legendary veteran like Stephen Curry to finally complete the puzzle.
On his podcast, Simmons said, “It’s not a ring chase, but what if San Antonio, with Fox and all the picks they have, just said, ‘Fuck it,’ and went to say, like, ‘We’ll do Fox. You put the picks together any way you want for a couple years of Steph here.’ And now we’re trying to acquire 2024 Olympic Steph, and he goes to San Antonio and tries to grab a couple more. It’s pretty interesting.”
He added, “With San Antonio, who has Atlanta’s first-round pick, they have a swap with Boston. They have swaps with Dallas or Minnesota in 2030. They have a 2030 swap with Sacramento, and they have all their firsts. And they have other stuff, too.”
But Simmons drew a clear line on who's actually available in that kind of deal. Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper, the Spurs' two building blocks in the backcourt behind Wembanyama, aren't part of his Curry conversation.
"Those guys would not be on the table," Simmons said, though he noted rookie forward Carter Bryant could realistically be included.
Castle won Rookie of the Year in the 2024-25 season and has developed into a reliable two-way piece next to Wembanyama. And Harper has quickly established himself as a future star in the backcourt. Trading either player would break up the young core the front office has spent seasons building around its 22-year-old star center.
Meanwhile, Bryant is a solid rotation piece, but he doesn't have the same untouchable value in trade talks right now. So, if the Spurs ever wanted to make a run at a second star, they have more than enough draft capital to get a deal as long as Castle and Harper stay off the table.
