Reason Marcus Rashford is missing Manchester United's friendly against Atletico Madrid in Stockholm
Extended holiday: The forward is currently unavailable for selection due to his post-World Cup break. There is a mandatory three-week gap between a player's final match at the tournament and the start of their pre-season campaign. England's last game in North America was three weeks ago, with the third-place play-off against France.
Barcelona setback: Rashford enjoyed a successful loan spell at Barcelona, helping the Catalans to the La Liga title. However, it wasn't enough to secure his desired permanent move, with Barca signing Anthony Gordon from Newcastle instead.
Premier League clause expiry: Any hopes of a quick resolution to his future prior to pre-season training were dashed earlier this summer. A £40 million clause allowing a sale to a Premier League buyer - except for Manchester City or Liverpool - expired without any club triggering it.
Transfer news: United remain keen on getting Rashford, who commands a weekly wage of £325,000, off the wage bill. Despite interest from home and abroad, it seems a compromise will be needed on both the fee and his wages if he is to move on.
Managerial relationship shift: Rashford fell out with Michael Carrick's predecessor, Ruben Amorim, who completely froze him out of the squad. There was no way back for him while the Portuguese coach but Carrick's appointment has left the door ajar.
Upcoming tour integration: Although he is not part of the Atletico fixture, he is due to link up with the squad ahead of the training camp in Ireland. It is possible he could be involved in the high-profile friendly against Leeds at Dublin's Croke Park on August 12.
