The Minnesota Timberwolves have joined the growing list of teams interested in free-agent forward Jonathan Kuminga.
According to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, Minnesota expressed interest in Kuminga after missing out on LeBron James, who ultimately signed with the Philadelphia 76ers.
Timberwolves identify Kuminga as potential starter
The Timberwolves have an opening at starting power forward and view Kuminga as a potential fit alongside the rest of their core.
"After missing out on their pursuit of LeBron James, the Minnesota Timberwolves have also expressed interest in Kuminga with their starting power forward spot up for grabs and their $6.06 million taxpayer mid-level exception available for the taking," Scotto reported.
However, Minnesota's financial limitations could make a deal difficult.
The Timberwolves can offer Kuminga their $6.06 million taxpayer mid-level exception, while the Los Angeles Lakers already have a significantly larger offer and a longer-term contract on the table.
The Cleveland Cavaliers could also provide Kuminga with a considerably higher salary through a sign-and-trade agreement.
Lakers and Cavaliers remain prominent suitors
Kuminga continues to generate active sign-and-trade interest from both Los Angeles and Cleveland, while a return to the Atlanta Hawks also remains possible.
Although Minnesota cannot currently match the financial opportunities available elsewhere, Scotto noted that the Timberwolves' interest remains significant because of the potential basketball fit.
Kuminga could immediately compete for a starting role and provide Minnesota with athleticism, transition scoring, and another forward capable of creating offense.
The 23-year-old's future remains unresolved as the Lakers, Cavaliers, Timberwolves, and Hawks continue to explore ways to add him ahead of the 2026-27 season.
