Michael Carrick’s Manchester United Blueprint: What Ex-Players, Pundits and Fans Said
Michael Carrick’s Manchester United Blueprint: What Ex-Players, Pundits and Fans Said
There are pre-season friendlies that drift by and are forgotten by teatime, and then there are the ones that get the Manchester United faithful excited. Manchester United’s 2-1 comeback win over Atletico Madrid in Stockholm was firmly the latter. Bryan Mbeumo’s World Cup form continues. With a second-half brace turned an early deficit into another statement result on the Red Devils’ Scandinavian tour, and the reaction across X was instant and loud from an ex-captain to the big fan channels.
Here at ReadManUtd, we have sifted through the noise to bring you the standout verdicts on a night that has United supporters daring to dream.
How Manchester United turned it around in Stockholm
It was not the greatest of starts. Atletico Madrid struck first inside five minutes through Arnau Ortiz, and for a spell Diego Simeone’s side looked comfortable. United, though, grew into the contest. The equaliser arrived just before the hour: ESPN UK noted how Mbeumo “had his eyes locked on the goalkeeper” as he dispatched a cool penalty past Jan Oblak.
The spot-kick itself was earned by teenage academy forward Shea Lacey, who turned the Atletico defender inside out to draw the foul a moment that had the fan channels purring.
Mbeumo was not finished. On 74 minutes he struck again to complete the turnaround as it finished Atletico Madrid 1-2 Manchester United. It was a second successive victory on the club’s pre-season tour of Scandinavia, and a third outing that offered Carrick’s side plenty to build on. Amad had already gone close with a free-kick that forced Oblak into a smart save.
The verdict: what they’re saying about United’s win
United ex-pros are purring
No reaction travelled further than that of club legend Patrice Evra. Asked whether any team could stop this United side next season, the former left-back did not hedge: “Those teams that thought they could stop Manchester United already lost today, so you have your answer.” It is classic Evra all belief and bravado. The optimism is not new, either. Only last week, Paul Scholes argued that United now have a style of play under Carrick, and performances like this one give that claim some legs.
The fans have found new heroes
If Mbeumo grabbed the headlines, it was the younger names who set the supporters talking. Popular fan account Darren was effusive about defender Ayden Heaven, hailing him as “a beast” who should “start more” and calling his reported arrival a steal from Arsenal. Fellow fan channel Stretford Paddock led the applause for Shea Lacey’s penalty-winning run, and the general feeling was best summed up by supporter Armstrong, who reckoned United had completely dominated the game in the second half under the banner of “Carrick at the wheel”. When the fanbase is this animated about a friendly, it tells you something about where the mood is heading.
Ofcourse it’s still only pre-season
Now for the cold water, because every level-headed United fan knows it needs pouring. This was a pre-season friendly. Atletico, like United, are deep in their own fitness work, rotating heavily and building towards their competitive opener rather than chasing a result in Sweden. Scorelines in July rarely survive contact with the Premier League in August, and we have all been burned before by a glorious summer that melted the moment the real football started.
There is context worth remembering, too. United finished third last season and are back in the Champions League, but it was still a campaign without a trophy. One spirited comeback against a shadow Atletico side does not erase the questions about squad depth, consistency and whether this group can grind out points when the sun is not shining.
How will United go this season?
Caveats aside, there is genuine substance here. The most encouraging takeaway is not the result but the identity: a United side that goes behind, keeps its shape and plays its way back into the game is a marked change from recent years. If Carrick can bed in that resilience before the season starts, the Red Devils will be a far tougher watch for opponents.
Mbeumo’s early sharpness is a huge plus, giving Carrick a ready-made attacking threat as the window ticks down. Just as important is the pathway: with Lacey earning penalties and Heaven impressing at the back, the academy production line is feeding the first team again. Add a Champions League return to the mix and the building blocks of a promising 2026-27 are visible provided the recruitment is finished off and the fitness holds. The next few weeks of the tour will tell us plenty more.
