Manchester United outcast Marcus Rashford is running out of escape routes after his two preferred summer destinations were taken off the table

Marcus Rashford is at a crossroads in his career - but one by one, the routes available are being closed off.
For months, the Manchester United forward looked set to join Barcelona after spending the 2025/26 season on loan in Catalonia. He made a solid impact there, registering 14 goals and 14 assists in 49 appearances for the Spanish giants.
However, Barcelona and United were unable to strike an agreement, prompting the La Liga champions to shift their attention elsewhere. They eventually completed a £70million deal for Anthony Gordon, ending Rashford's hopes of staying at the club.
Speaking on Friday, Barcelona manager Hansi Flick admitted Rashford will be "missed" at the club, while insisting Gordon had already made a superb impression.
"What I can say about Marcus is that I appreciate a lot to work with him," Flick said. "Sometimes you don't know what's going to happen with players on loan... our situation wasn't easy. But I appreciated working with him a lot. He's a fantastic player, a fantastic person.
"The team misses him, I will miss him. But it's life. It's what we have to accept. Anthony Gordon has come in... and he's on fire with Barca. I'm really happy he's now with us."

Although a dream move to Barcelona slipped away, Rashford still appeared to have another attractive route available. The 28-year-old impressed during the second half of the 2024/25 campaign while on loan at Aston Villa, delivering several influential performances under Unai Emery.
The feeling seemed mutual. Once his spell at Villa Park came to an end, Rashford took to social media to thank "everyone here at Villa for what has (injury aside) been an incredible few months for me."
He added: "It is a really special club and I appreciated the way Villa fans embraced me with open arms from 1st minute on the pitch."
But that avenue seems to have been cut off too after Villa sealed a loan deal for Chelsea winger, and Rashford's former United team-mate, Alejandro Garnacho last month meaning they no longer need to fill his position.

As things stand, Rashford finds himself in limbo. Michael Carrick is believed to be willing to reintegrate him into the Manchester United squad, but after the club strengthened its attacking options significantly last summer, there is no guarantee Rashford would reclaim a regular starting place.
That said, opportunities are still out there. Tottenham have tracked the England international for some time and may view him as the proven goalscorer they need after missing out on Randal Kolo Muani, who is expected to complete a move to Juventus instead.
Chelsea could also emerge as contenders. Liam Delap endured a difficult first season at Stamford Bridge, leaving Xabi Alonso's side short of reliable attacking output beyond Joao Pedro. Although the Blues already have plenty of forward options - and former United striker Danny Welbeck is reportedly close to joining the club - Rashford's experience and pedigree could still make him an attractive addition.
As things, however, neither club have made their interest formal, leaving Rashford in a state of uncertainty. With Barcelona gone, Villa off the table and United no longer guaranteeing him a starring role, he is running out of places to turn - and running out of time to find his next chapter.
