Manchester United's third pre-season game of the campaign saw the Reds defeat Atletico Madrid 2-1 in Stockholm, Sweden.

Carrick is revolutionising Mount
When United signed Mount from Chelsea in 2023 for an initial £55 million fee, the reality never quite met expectations, with injuries consistently hampering the English midfielder from securing a starting spot.
However, under Carrick toward the final few games of last season, Mount was being deployed as a deeper midfielder as opposed to his usual No. 10 spot, which caught a few people by surprise.
In the summer, this trend has continued, and the 27-year-old has been phenomenal in the middle of the park. Playing alongside Andrey Santos, the duo has controlled tempos brilliantly.
What has been surprising and fairly unexpected about Mount is how strong and comfortable he looks, both with the pitch ahead of him and when receiving the ball with his back to goal.
With the way Mount has been playing so far in pre-season, Carrick may be hinting at the idea of the midfielder becoming a starting XI player for at least the opening few games of the 2026/27 campaign.

Carrick's football next season is clear
Mount is playing a little like his head coach used to, in a very underrated role that allows teams to dominate on the ball and maintain high-intensity attacks in the opposition's final third.
Mount is playing a fluid and dynamic role that very few players in the United squad would be able to pull off, and it's a clear indicator that the United boss is transitioning to playing a much more domineering style of football next season.
United are filling their squad with plenty of technical quality, with the likes of Mount, Matheus Cunha, Bruno Fernandes, Shea Lacey, Luke Shaw, and Amad all fit and raring to go.
When you then add Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos, and possibly Lewis Hall into the mix, United fans must start to expect seeing high-possession and sustainable football at Old Trafford next season.
