Manchester United came from behind to beat Atletico Madrid 2-1 in Michael Carrick's toughest test since taking charge, with Bryan Mbeumo scoring both goals to seal the victory.
The Spanish side made the perfect start, taking the lead after just six minutes. Arnau Ortiz's cross evaded everyone in the box and caught Tom Heaton off guard before finding the back of the net to make it 1-0.
Despite the early setback, United controlled much of the first half and created the better opportunities. Their best chance arrived when Mason Mount delivered a cross to the far post for Luke Shaw, whose well-struck volley was brilliantly turned away by Jan Oblak.
The Red Devils eventually found their equaliser after the break when Shea Lacey weaved through the Atletico defence before being brought down in the area. Mbeumo stepped up and calmly converted the resulting penalty.
The Cameroon international completed the comeback in the 74th minute. Jack Fletcher won possession high up the pitch before squaring the ball to Mbeumo, who had the simple task of tapping home his second goal of the afternoon.
Mbeumo's Premier League title hint
There is little doubt that, having signed several reinforcements while trying to complete the transfers of Bruno Guimarães and Vinicius Jr., Arsenal are the bonafide favorites for the 2026/27 Premier League title.
However, United had a brilliant second half of the campaign last time out under Michael Carrick, finishing third in the league – something that was unsurpriseng for mbeumo.
“I wasn’t surprised,” Mbeumo said when asked by the press about the third-place finish following the win over Atletico. “Because it’s a big club and we always aim big and we worked a lot to be there, so I wasn’t surprised."
When asked what United could do that was 'bigger' than last season, the Cameroon international replied with a cheeky grin and "We will see," sending a message to Arsenal about United's ambitions this campaign.
“We always try to give the best that we can on the pitch and work really hard, so we will see and try our best.”

Mbeumo's multi-purpose abilities are an asset to United
Mbeumo's stunning season that earned him his move to United, in which he scored 20 Premier League goals for Brentford, mostly came from his brilliant performances on the right-hand side.
While the 26-year-old started his career at Old Trafford playing on the right alongside Amad under Rúben Amorim, his role changed once Carrick took charge of the club.
Mbeumo was then shifted to play as a striker more often, and he scored some big goals against Manchester City, Arsenal, and Tottenham. Against Atletico Madrid, he was once again playing through the middle.
The player was asked further what he feels is his favored position, to which he replied that where he is best playing, be that on the wing or as a striker, more depends on the game and the opposition they are playing.
“Obviously, I’m lucky to be able to play a different position, and I try to give my best. It depends on the games (where I play)," he added.
“We try to get ready for the first game of the season and we work really hard on the training so it’s really important to have good results as well."
While Mbeumo was up front, he had young star Shea Lacey behind him, who is expected to have a true breakout season across the campaign, and spoke highly of the teenage talent.
“(Lacey’s) a young player with good abilities and is working hard, so happy to have him.”
