Chido Obi’s 2026/27 season looks set to be a challenge to prove himself away from Man Utd, and that challenge needs to be in one place only.
The writing seemed to be on the wall for Chido Obi since the first game of the pre-season when Ethan Wheatley played ahead of him.
He did get a few minutes against Rosenborg, but then was out of the squad entirely vs Atletico, signalling his absence in Michael Carrick’s plans this season.
Many teams will be interested in a loan for Obi because of his goalscoring pedigree, but Man Utd must make one thing clear.

Bundesliga is the ideal place for Chido Obi
The number of youngsters who lost themselves in the grind of lower league football in the name of “English football experience” is too many to count.
The reality is, some players need a different profile of football to flourish, and that can be easily translated to English football once confidence starts to flow.
Obi’s case sums that up perfectly, because he is a player who must be sent outside of England on loan at all costs.
More specifically, he needs a German football loan, because his style of play suits that league perfectly.
Of all the top-five leagues, the Bundesliga is played at the most intense pace, end-to-end, and with players having positional freedom.
Obi’s game has improved immensely on and off the ball, and the last thing he needs is a loan where he is fighting pointless physical battles with veteran centre-backs in lower leagues.
Instead, he needs a league where he can show his finishing skills, running with the ball in space, and link-up play as part of his all-around game.
The Bundesliga is perfectly suited to show those skills, and he can easily be a player who crosses the ten-goal mark in that league as soon as this season.
He must be protected from the ancient “Welcome to English football” loan at all costs. Football has moved beyond that one-dimensional skill set, and it will set Obi back.
A loan to the German league will make him a star if he joins a team where he is trusted to start every week.
