Manchester United fans are growing frustrated at the lack of transfer activity, but at least the Red Devils are not facing a repeat of their 2006 crisis.
This summer, Manchester United made a fairly quick start to the summer transfer window, completing deals for Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans.
Karl Darlow and Tynan Thompson have also arrived to strengthen Michael Carrick’s squad. But United fans are awaiting a third midfield signing and some supporters are also anticipating reinforcements at centre-forward and left-back.
While some areas of the fanbase are angered by the transfer business so far, at least United can avoid a repeat of 2006, when Sir Alex Ferguson was scrambling to find midfield signings and was forced to play centre-back Rio Ferdinand in midfield.

Man United’s transfer scramble forced Rio Ferdinand into midfield
In the 2005/06 season, Ferguson found himself short of midfield options, with Ji-Sung Park the only midfield arrival from the summer window.
In January, United were suffering an injury crisis, and Rio Ferdinand adopted a midfield role in a 3-0 win over Wolves.
Ferdinand played a deep, defensive midfield role, partnering Ji-Sung Park in a 4-4-2 formation. Darren Fletcher was rested by Ferguson, but came on as a second-half substitute.
As quoted by Sky Sports, Ferdinand reflected on his makeshift role: “You have to be able to fit in all over the park if it benefits the team.
“On Sunday, we had a lot of injuries and the manager also decided Darren Fletcher needed a rest, so I went in there. It was an interesting, new experience but who knows whether I could step up to that position against an international side.
“*I am a centre half by trade and ideally I would prefer to play there.*“
United then went on to sign Michael Carrick in the summer of 2006 to strengthen their midfield options. Twenty years later, he is now the head coach of the Red Devils.

Last season, Lisandro Martinez stepped into midfield when Bruno Fernandes suffered an injury against Aston Villa.
It was a clear sign that Ruben Amorim’s side was short of midfield options. When Carrick stepped into the managerial hotseat, he immediately made it clear that midfield reinforcements were needed.

Now, United have an array of midfield options heading into 2026/27. Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans, Mason Mount and Kobbie Mainoo will all be competing for two starting spots in Carrick’s 4-2-3-1 formation.
A third midfield signing could still arrive this summer, but academy stars Jim Thwaites, Tyler Fletcher and Jacob Devaney are all on standby to fill in the numbers if needed.
