£55m Man Utd star is forcing Michael Carrick to rethink midfield
Mason Mount has quietly become one of Manchester United’s biggest pre-season positives.
After years of injuries and interrupted momentum, the Mason Mount midfield role under Michael Carrick suddenly looks far more important ahead of the new campaign.
United have already transformed the centre of their squad. Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans have arrived, Casemiro has left and Manuel Ugarte faces a lengthy recovery from the ACL injury he suffered at the World Cup.
Yet Mount has used that uncertainty to force himself back into Carrick’s thinking.
ReadManUtd argued at the start of pre-season that Mount’s willingness to play deeper could help Carrick without solving United’s wider midfield problem. Three weeks later, that role looks increasingly credible.

Mount’s Manchester United career has rarely been allowed to develop naturally.
Recurring injuries have prevented him from building rhythm since his £55million move from Chelsea in 2023. Carrick has now had something previous United managers rarely enjoyed: a sustained period with Mount fit and available.
The early signs have been encouraging.
Sky Sports highlighted Mount’s performance in United’s opening friendly against Wrexham, with Carrick praising the midfielder’s combinations and movement in attacking areas.
He has also spent time operating deeper alongside Santos.
That versatility matters. Mount can play as an eight when United need energy between the boxes, but he can still move higher when Carrick wants another player around the penalty area.
The issue has never really been whether Mount possesses the quality. United have needed him to remain available long enough to show it.
United should still sign another midfielder
Mount’s return should not change the recruitment plan completely.
ReadManUtd reported on Sunday that another central midfielder remains under consideration, despite the arrivals of Santos and Tielemans.
That remains sensible.
Tielemans has only just returned following the World Cup, while Kobbie Mainoo also went deep into the tournament with England. United are preparing for Champions League football again and cannot rely on Mount suddenly remaining available for an entire season.
Sky Sports has also reported that United wanted three midfield additions this summer, with an athletic option still being assessed.
Mount can reduce the desperation to sign someone. He should not remove the need altogether.
Carrick has another genuine option
The bigger change is how Mount should now be viewed inside Carrick’s squad.
A few months ago, questions surrounded whether he could command a meaningful role at Old Trafford. His fitness record made any long-term plan difficult.
Pre-season has started to change that conversation.
Mount has been available throughout Carrick’s early work and has shown he can contribute from deeper positions rather than simply compete with Bruno Fernandes.
There are bigger names in United’s midfield rebuild, and another signing may still arrive.
But if Mount finally stays fit, Carrick has gained an option that barely felt dependable when the summer began.
