Sky Sports ‘ Man Utd correspondent Danyal Khan has reiterated that the Red Devils are “unlikely” to sign a midfielder for £60m to £70m.

Khan has good sources at Old Trafford, but he caused some controversy when he said on Sky Sports News that the Manchester club would “pay less” if they do end up making a third addition in the middle of the park.

He took to X to say that he is aware the club have not spent that much on any player so far this summer, but he stood by his initial remarks:

Lots of notifications about the word ‘another’ here – context on the tele was if #mufc bring in an additional midfielder, it will be unlikely to be at the price mentioned – aware they haven’t spent that much on one player so far, thank you 🫡 https://t.co/WYjchyNwum

It does suggest that any pursuit of a ‘top tier’ midfielder, like Real Madrid’s Eduardo Camavinga, Roma’s Manu Kone, Lille’s Ayyoub Bouaddi or Borussia Dortmund’s Felix Nmecha, is not on the cards.

Man Utd have contacted the agents of several targets

Khan’s comments are surprising, considering that Fabrizio Romano has reported that the Red Devils have spoken to those representing both Camavinga and Kone.

However, contacting a player’s entourage is not the same thing as registering formal interest and making a bid, so you can not definitively dismiss Khan’s claim either.

Which midfielders could be pursued instead?

Links to Bournemouth’s Tyler Adams do make a lot more sense if there is no interest in paying over £60m for a top midfielder. The American international is said to be on the market for around £35m, although the Cherries may end up holding out for more than that.

Fulham’s Sander Berge would be another potential candidate in the same price bracket, but neither player would exactly set the pulses racing.
