Jadon Sancho is currently training with Flixton FC, a club that plays in the North West Counties League Division One North, the 10th tier of English football.
He is now a free agent after his contract with Manchester United ended, and, whilst he waits for his next move, he may wonder what has happened to a career that at one stage seemed the brightest.
At Borussia Dortmund, the English winger appeared destined to become one of the defining players of his generation. He had pace, creativity, technical ability and the confidence to influence matches at the highest level. Alongside players such as Erling Haaland, he represented the next generation of global football stars.
Now, after a difficult few years, he finds himself facing an uncertain future. His decline has been one of the most striking examples of how quickly football can change. A player once viewed as a potential Ballon d’Or contender is now searching for the right environment to revive a career that has stalled.
His career achieved lift-off when he left Manchester City’s academy in 2017 to join Borussia Dortmund.
The move was a risk for a teenager, but it proved to be the perfect decision. Dortmund had built a reputation for developing young talent, and Sancho quickly became one of the Bundesliga’s most exciting attackers.
Between 2018 and 2021, he scored more than 50 goals and provided over 60 assists for Dortmund. He was outstanding in one-on-one situations, capable of creating chances as well as scoring himself, and appeared to have the potential to become England’s next global superstar.
His performances attracted attention from Europe’s biggest clubs, and Manchester United eventually secured his signature in 2021 for around £73 million.
The move to Old Trafford was supposed to mark the next stage of Sancho’s career.
Instead, it became increasingly difficult. Sancho struggled to reproduce the form he had shown in Germany. Manchester United were going through a period of instability, with managerial changes and tactical uncertainty making it difficult for several attacking players to find consistency. The pressure of playing for United also proved very different from his experience at Dortmund. Every poor performance attracted significant criticism, while the size of his transfer fee increased expectations.
The situation reached breaking point in 2023 when Sancho publicly disputed comments from manager Erik ten Hag after being left out of the squad against Arsenal. The disagreement ended with him being removed from first-team training and eventually leaving on loan.
Sancho returned to Borussia Dortmund on loan in January 2024, and initially it appeared that he had rediscovered his confidence.
He played a key role as Dortmund reached the Champions League final, producing impressive performances during the knockout stages. However, the club did not make the move permanent.
A loan spell at Chelsea followed, offering another opportunity to restart his career. Once again, there were flashes of the player Dortmund fans remembered, but not enough consistency to convince Chelsea to complete a permanent transfer.
His latest chance came with Aston Villa, where he joined on loan in an attempt to rebuild under Unai Emery. Villa offered European football, strong coaching and a less intense environment than Manchester United, but the same issue remained: moments of brilliance were not followed by sustained performances.
Now at 26 he finds himself at a crossroads.
The talent that made him one of Europe’s most exciting young players has not disappeared. His ability to beat defenders, create chances and influence attacking play remains obvious.
However, modern football is judged by consistency rather than potential. Sancho’s challenge is no longer proving that he has ability; it is finding the confidence, stability and environment that allow him to produce it regularly.
He is now unlikely to ever fulfil the immense potential that he showed as a youth. His challenge now is to accept that and still prove that he has a lot to offer any potential employers.
