In stark contrast to the frantic, spend-at-all-costs scattergun tactics of their rivals, Manchester United have executed a calm and deliberate transfer strategy.
The transfer window has been used by multiple Premier League clubs as an excuse to go wild.
Many have endured heavy spending sprees, with another year set to go by where teams from the English top flight dwarf investments from clubs in Spain, Italy and Germany. The financial power is unmatched; it has been the trend for many years.
It’s time to examine how things are going in terms of net spend for Premier League clubs in comparison with Manchester United.

Man Utd ranked 9th in Premier League’s big spenders this summer
Premier League clubs have committed over £1.5bn in gross fees so far this summer.
As things stand, the top three spenders are Chelsea (£333m), Tottenham (£228.6m), and Man City (£150m). All three clubs have taken a hit of at least £128m in the process.
The only clubs that have spent more than United this summer include Newcastle United, Brighton & Hove Albion, Aston Villa, Liverpool, and Ipswich Town.
There’s still plenty of time for that change, with United fans eager to see more quality added to Michael Carrick’s squad.
United have thus far spent £83.3m on Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, overlooking more expensive signings such as Elliot Anderson (£116m), Sandro Tonali (£100m) and Mateus Fernandes (£85m).
The Reds also completed the free transfer of Karl Darlow as a backup goalkeeper to Senne Lammens. Yet there’s still a feeling that more quality will be required in midfield, especially among the fans who will not be persuaded that Mason Mount can be a reliable option throughout the 2026/27 season despite his impressive displays on tour.
It has been a difficult mark for United to operate in. Keen to build the squad with quality and character, excessive spending from other clubs has proved an obstacle. It also remains to be seen if those deals will be a success at the likes of Man City and Tottenham.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos have made many cuts since 2024 to try to improve United’s books to give the club every opportunity it needs, but all those ‘savings’ could be easily wasted by one bad transfer window.
United want to avoid that because they’ve experienced too many of them in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.

There’s never a shortage of transfer rumours when it comes to United.
Every Tom, Dick and Harry gets linked to Old Trafford, and agents will be happy to use the club to spark interest in their clients towards the end of the transfer window.
United will be offered a flurry of players in that spell. Options to bolster the defence, midfield and attack.
A left-back seems to have become a priority before the new season kicks off. Most United fans still believe a top midfielder is needed, and it would be risky to start a season with just one recognised centre-forward.
