Over the last few weeks, we have consistently pressed the Club to:
* provide supporters with enough information to understand and answer the case against them;
* reserve the most severe sanctions for the most serious cases, particularly those involving organised commercial touting or financial gain;
* review every case individually rather than relying simply on patterns of account activity;
* distinguish between intelligence that justifies investigation and evidence that justifies serious sanctions; and
* ensure the process is proportionate, transparent and fair.
Today's club statement reflects movement by the Club on a number of those issues but we can only judge how far things have moved in reality at the end of the process.
However, we remain deeply unhappy with the way this exercise was conceived and conducted. Many supporters have experienced significant anxiety and uncertainty, and we continue to believe there should have been meaningful consultation with supporter representatives before the exercise began. Many cases have been overturned but we believe there are still many fans caught up in this process unfairly.
The publication of a statement is also only part of the picture. What ultimately matters is not what has been promised publicly, but how those commitments are implemented in practice in the live cases that remain. We will therefore continue to scrutinise individual cases closely and press the Club to ensure the commitments it has made are reflected consistently in its decisions.
Ultimately, the Club makes the decisions. Supporter representatives can influence those decisions through dialogue, but we cannot determine them. Our role is to continue making the strongest possible case on behalf of supporters and to secure every improvement we can.
Some supporters have understandably questioned whether fan representatives should continue engaging with the Club at all. We understand those frustrations. It would undoubtedly be easier, and would remove much of the personal criticism directed towards fan representatives, simply to walk away.
However, we do not believe that would help the supporters who remain caught up in this process. They need independent representation now more than at any point since the investigation began. We therefore believe we have a responsibility to continue pressing for the best outcome we can achieve for them, even where that falls well short of what we believe should have happened.
Dialogue does not mean agreeing with the Club, nor does it mean accepting decisions we believe are wrong. It means continuing to represent supporters' interests, challenging the Club robustly, pressing for change and securing every improvement we can achieve. Ultimately, however, the Club will be judged not by today's words, but by the decisions it makes and how those decisions are implemented in practice.
Once the current cases have concluded, there will need to be a much broader and more fundamental discussion. That must include how such a significant exercise proceeded without meaningful supporter consultation, what lessons should be learned from the process, how supporter engagement should operate in future, and what changes are needed to ensure this situation is not repeated.
For now, our focus remains clear: standing alongside the supporters whose cases are still live, continuing to challenge the Club where necessary, and doing everything we can to ensure they receive a fair process and the best possible outcome.
